Snow White: The Sacrifice has been named an award winner at the Mannheim Arts and Film Festival — recognition for a work that boldly reimagines a familiar story into something far darker and more unsettling.
This is not a tale of innocence, but one of cruelty, envy, and obsession. At its centre is the Queen—not a simple villain, but a woman consumed by the fear of aging and the loss of power. As her grip on youth slips away, she sacrifices everything in a desperate attempt to remain seen.
Blending dance, cinema, and poetic narration, the film strips the story to its core. Beauty becomes a weapon. Power distorts. Identity fractures. Through striking choreography by Liv Lorent and direction by Ben , the Queen’s psychological descent is brought vividly to life, set against a haunting score by Murray Gold and words by Carol Ann Duffy.
Raw, visually arresting, and emotionally unflinching, Snow White: The Sacrifice is a powerful exploration of the terror of irrelevance—and the cost of trying to outrun it.

This International Dance Day, we’re reflecting on Best Worst Dances — a powerful work-in-progress shared in November 2025.
Bringing together professional dancers and 16 members of the local community (aged 17–70+), the piece explored what it really means to “dance like nobody’s watching.”
Set on a nightclub floor with a glitter ball, bar, and vintage jukebox, performers moved for themselves — not for an audience — choosing music, coming and going, and embracing movement in its most natural form.
Raw, unfiltered, and deeply human, Best Worst Dances reminded us that dance doesn’t need to be perfect to be meaningful.

Our Youth Academy Spring Showcase (just before Easter) was packed with creativity, energy, and seriously impressive work. Two original pieces, created and performed by our young people, lit up the studio.
balletLORENT’s Youth Academy is our programme for creatively talented children and young people aged 7–19 based in Newcastle upon Tyne. It’s a space where young artists get to work closely with our creative team and guest facilitators, exploring dance, movement, theatre, music, film, and spoken word.
Across the term, both our Juniors (7–12yrs) and Creative Studio (13–19yrs) have been developing new skills, experimenting with ideas, and building original work in a professional creative environment.
Over 70 people joined us in the studio to share in the performance and support our young artists.
We’re so proud of everyone involved—what an incredible celebration of creativity and talent 👏

Since 2012, balletLORENT has been bringing something truly distinctive to theatres across the UK: our Young Cast.
On every national tour, we work with local primary schools near each venue, delivering free workshops and inviting children to take part in our productions. None of them are trained dancers, and that is exactly the point.
From first-time performers to appearing alongside our professional company, these young casts bring honesty, energy, and spontaneity that cannot be rehearsed.
To date, over 800 children have performed on stage, and almost 8,000 have taken part in our free creative workshops in schools across the country.
From forest creatures to maypole dances and scooter entrances, each performance is shaped by their presence in a unique way.
For many children, it is their first experience of a theatre. For some, it is life-changing.

We’re excited to share that balletLORENT has been nominated for Best Mid-Scale Company at the 26th National Dance Awards.
The awards celebrate excellence across the dance sector. balletLORENT is nominated alongside Company Wayne McGregor, National Dance Company Wales, Phoenix Dance Theatre, and Scottish Dance Theatre.
In 2025, we toured Snow White and Snow White: The Sacrifice across the UK, performing for audiences of all ages — something that remains central to our work.
Our CEO and Artistic Director, Liv Lorent, said:
“It’s an honour to be recognised for thriving as a mid-scale touring company, and for continuing to share our mix of ballet and storytelling dance theatre with family audiences. Working with performers and audiences across generations is at the heart of what we do.
As the most northern dance company of our size in England, we’re hugely grateful to the theatres that programme our work, and to the audiences who come along with us. This nomination gives us a real boost and celebrates everyone who helps make our work possible.”
Winners will be announced on 15 June at The Coronet Theatre, London.

balletLORENT productions are built like a family—onstage and off. Snow White began in 2015 with a new adaptation by Carol Ann Duffy, with Ben Crompton shaping the staging and Murray Gold’s music, alongside Lindsey Duncan’s narration, setting the tone for the work.
A brilliant team brought the world to life—from Phil Eddols’ set and Libby Everall Alfy’s costumes, to Malcolm Rippeth’s lighting and Jack Sudden’s sound design. Behind the scenes, rehearsal director Debbi Purtill, production manager Simon Henderson, and stage management teams worked together to shape every detail.
In 2025, we returned to Snow White with two versions: the family show and Snow White: The Sacrifice (16+). Working from our own studio for the first time, the creative family grew—bringing in Nasir Mazhar for new costumes, Sarah Parish as narrator, and new text and music by Carol Ann Duffy and Murray Gold. The storytelling deepened, with darker lighting, new design, and reimagined scenes.
Across both productions, our makers, knitters, designers and stage teams all played a vital role. Touring to venues across the country, with almost 50 performances in total, Snow White and The Sacrifice celebrate collaboration, imagination, and the strength of our creative family.
