People say, “I made a movie!”
I used to think that would be so cool to say. But now, after actually making a movie, I realize how foolish that sounds. The truth is, WE made a movie.
Our new documentary, “Growth,” explores the healing power of laughter in the face of the scariest subject in the world. It features survivors, comedians, doctors and caregivers asking, “How do you joke about cancer? CAN you joke about cancer? And WHY should you joke about cancer?” Premiering in March at the @cinequestorg film festival in San Jose, “Growth” is the culmination of a joyful collaboration with some great, talented people; some who started off as good friends, some who became good friends.
I’m so proud to share this moment with them and all of you.

What a thrill it was to deliver the #keynote session presentation at @stupidcancer ’s annual #CancerCon. A room full of #ayacancer survivors got to hear me and @djcherishtheluv talk about “Cancer, the muse” - how to turn your tragedy into art. A great weekend with amazing people!

Sharing @baldbryan ’s tribute to Charlie from his Baldywood newsletter, because I still can’t find the right words:
After 15 1/2 glorious years, we bid farewell to our beloved dog, Charlie. We estimate he made it the ripe old age of 17; an estimate, because we adopted him in 2010, when he was about 1 1/2.
Crazy people will try to convince you that their dog is more than a dog - “He’s my child!” But in Charlie’s case, he was more than just a dog to us. When my wife and I adopted him in mid-2010, I had just completed a year of treatment for a brain tumor that was supposed to kill me in “six months to a year.” Newlyweds for barely a year, Charlie was our first toe-dip into an uncertain future. Having actual children was very far off our radar. We weren’t even certain if adopting a dog was responsible; As far as we knew, I was living on borrowed time.
Fast forward 15 years. We have a 9 year old daughter who is the light of our lives. We have a home full of love, laughter and joy. I wrote a bestselling book and am about to release a feature film. My wife has ascended her career ladder at a remarkable pace and shows no signs of slowing down. And Charlie was there every step of the way.
There are literally over 1,000 pictures of Charlie that I could share with you, but here are the first and last pictures we ever took of him - on the day we adopted him and on the day he left us. It’s amazing to think that, in the 15+ years between these two pictures, so much happened in all of our lives.
It was a running joke in our family - usually when we fed our dog filet mignon, or Christie microplaned fresh parmesan cheese onto his food - that Charlie “won the doggie lottery” when we adopted him. That’s close; it was actually the other way around.
That’s it for round one on @filmfreeway for our movie, “Growth!” 10 festivals submitted to, large and small. It’s been an absolute honor to even be considered for these festivals. Can’t wait to share with you all when (hopefully!) we get our first acceptances! This must be what it feels like when parents send their kids off to college. “Make good choices!”
