My new novel, The Foursome (coming next May) is based on a family saga I couldnāt stop thinking about. I canāt wait to share it with the world! Pre-orders, worldwide, are open now (link in bio!)
At my event last night in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, something extraordinary happened: four of Chang Bunkerās descendants came, bringing with them a necklace that has been passed down through the family for generations. The necklace, they told me, was given to Chang by King Rama III, the newly crowned king of Siam (now Thailand), when the twins visited the royal court in Bangkok in 1825. Several years later they left Siam for America, never to return, and became known around the world as āthe Siamese Twins.ā Researching this novel, I saw many objects connected to Chang and Eng. I read accounts, studied archives, followed paper trails. But to stand in a bookstore in Pennsylvania with descendants carrying an object the brother owned almost exactly two centuries ago was something else entirely. This is one of the gifts of writing fiction set in the past. You spend years trying to bring the past to life, and every now and then the past taps you on a shoulder. P.S. shoutout to the lovely bookstore @doylestownbookshop , and all the friendly folks who came out!
