“Freed Agent.”
It’s been something like 8 years since the first draft of this piece. It’s been so long in fact that most of the “current” player references are outdated at this point.
Gosh I’m getting old yall. Even so to this day I love hearing a random person yell out “DO THE NBA POEM!” at an event when I’m on stage.
I honestly love this piece. It was one of the most fun writing processes for me as somebody who loves the game of basketball as much as I do.
Is the poem too long? Oh yes absolutely it is. It should probably be 2 or even 3 separate poems in theory. Are a third of the references so obscure that they go over the heads of an audience? Yup you betcha. But there’s always that one hooper in the room who catches every bar and makes for some great conversations afterwards.
What’s wild is I wrote this poem actually before even joining the Ripe community and subsequently launching @ripecreatives . I’m grateful that the words I wrote about why I wrote and performed back then — still reflect the totality of my views today.
While I’m not outside quite as much as I once was I’m so grateful for the rare opportunities I get to still share what’s been given to me. A wise friend once said “if you want to make an impact start walking in a direction slow enough for people to come with you… and make sure you go long enough for them to figure out where you’re heading on their own.”
