Introducing the Sessions and Instructors for Spring Salute: Real to Abstract (Part 3) “Violence Beyond the Literal” led by Movement Director @michelle_mishmak How can we communicate violence without relying on realistic action? This session focuses on using movement and ensemble work to explore ideas of impact, tension and aftermath. Through simple physical tasks, participants will build awareness of weight, timing and connection, and begin to translate moments of violence into clear, stylised physical choices. Michelle is a Movement Director, Director and drama educator, and the Artistic Director of Mishmak Youth Theatre. She is a Frantic Assembly Practitioner and delivers movement and devising workshops across the UK and internationally. She recently worked as Associate Movement Director on The Manningtree Witches (Mercury Theatre, Colchester, 2026), and completed a National Theatre Production Placement in fight direction, shadowing Kate Waters. With a background in dance, martial arts and boxing, her work is physically rigorous and actor-led, creating bold, embodied storytelling rooted in ensemble and clarity of intention.

Introducing the Sessions and Instructors for Spring Salute: Real to Abstract (Part 2) “The Duellists, Destreza and Dancing (like people are watching)” led by BADC Teacher @hellier.robin We will work with short phrases of rapier choreography to explore the performance choices we can make to push towards a grounded realism, or to stylise our presentation with aspects of physical storytelling, magic or dance. Is fantasy better than reality? Is it really spin to win? And at what point does Indiana Jones just pull his pistol out and shoot you? Robin is a Fight & Intimacy Director and a BADC Teacher. Recent credits include The Three Musketeers (Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre), A Streetcar Named Desire (Pitlochry Festival Theatre), and REVENGE: After the Levoyah (UK tour / Soho Theatre). He teaches at East 15, ArtsEd and Metfilm School London.

Introducing the Sessions and Instructors for Spring Salute: Real to Abstract (Part 1) “Blade Flow: The Art of Doce Pares Knife Fighting” led by @hybrid_fma_martial_arts Master @ermaralexander This class explores the dynamic and practical approach of the Doce Pares system, focusing on the integration of timing, flow, and control in Filipino knife fighting. Students will learn how to transition smoothly between offense and defense through structured drills and partner work, developing coordination, sensitivity, and awareness at close range. Emphasis will be placed on fundamental concepts such as angling, distance management, and fluid movement, making the material accessible while remaining rooted in real-world application. Alex is a Filipino Martial Arts practitioner and instructor specialising in Eskrima, with a focus on the Doce Pares system. With years of training in weapons-based movement, Alex combines traditional principles with a modern, practical approach to teaching. His work emphasises flow, adaptability, and functional skill development, helping students build confidence and efficiency in their movement. Alongside martial arts, Alex is also involved in film and stunt work, bringing a strong sense of realism and performance awareness into his teaching.

BADC STANDARD LEVEL at @cragpitstudios ⚔️❤️‍🔥👊 Last week saw the successful completion of the second @badc_uk residential course at Crag Pit Studios! Participants shared a week living, eating and training together, working intensively on rapier and unarmed dramatic combat… along with chill out time and some trips to the seaside 🏡🌊 Enthusiastic and committed students gathered from across the UK and Europe, bringing a gorgeous multitude of practices into the mix: screen performance, physical theatre, historical reenactment and musical theatre 🌍🎭 Huge thanks to @rosannamallinson for creating the incredible training space, and for being such a welcoming host. Massive kudos to @katesketchley for being an awesome teaching assistant, and all of the appreciation to @combatclairefights for running the performance exam and workshop 🙌🙏 My heart is full of gratitude for these best of times shared with the best of humans. Onwards to more courses (and inevitable victory)! Photo credit to the incomparable @flowie8a #dramaticcombat #actortraining #fightperformer
