1 of 6 new Backatcha releases available now including a limited website exclusive. Stars... Soul-Funk-Disco-grail officially reissued for the first time by Backatcha Records. Recorded and released in 1981 on the Cadle brothers Starbase Sounds label, Stars' core line-up consisted of the same rhythm section and keys player for the labels Aura and Freex Machine releases. “Stars was a band name and not a band”, explains musician Steven Young, a Queensbridge native who played keyboards and more, on all of the Starbase recordings. It was a studio group made up of (mostly) players from the group Hooker, Young's neighbourhood band of musician friends from Queensbridge and Corona, Queens. Hooker performed on the New York live circuit as a teenage funk band since the early '70s. At the helm of Starbase Sounds was multi-instrumentalist Young and the Cadle Brothers trio: guitarist, lead vocalist and producer Ray Cadle, bassist Jules Cadle, and an older brother Karim as executive producer. They released a total of four singles including 'Dancin' People', and three previous singles from The Freex Machine and Aura, all equally prized and sought after, now made available by Backatcha Records. For DJs and collectors, the backdrop to the Starbase Sounds releases has remained something of an enigma. A Q&A with Steven Young at backatcharecords.com offers a comprehensive insight into the makings... #corona #queens #newyork #soul #jazz #funk #disco #sounds #stars #ditc #breakbeats #limited #45rpm #vinyl #backatcharecords #queensbridge

Originally released in 1993 on UK-based indy-label Contribution Records amongst a roster of artists from the West Midlands, Manchester and Scotland, 'Midnight Love' has remained the label's stand-out cut for street soul heads. Produced by Frank O'Donnell, this 45 single comes with the previously unreleased instrumental version sourced from the master tapes. Andy McLean: “This track developed into a much sought-after UK Soul track amongst soul enthusiasts preferring the UK Street Soul sound, drawing influences from our Caribbean heritage, genres and lifestyles." #uk #streetsoul #randb #soul #beats #1993 #midnight #love #master #tapes #birmingham #caribbean #ditc #vinyl #45records #folk #art #diy #bedroom #musician #sound #houseparty #1993 #drummachine #synth #music #vibes #1990s

One of two singles released today only at backatcharecords.com Forming as teenagers in the late 70s, female vocal group Black Harmony was comprised of Diane Cape, Dup'e Odelade, and Denise Mansfield (sister of Ingrid Mansfield-Allman, lead vocalist on Freeez’s ‘Southern Freeez’). Whilst their much-loved 1979 cover version debut ’Don’t Let It Go To Your Head’ (Jean Carn) was a hit on the UK reggae charts, gaining major label distribution, Black Harmony’s self-penned 'Let’s Be Lovers’ has arguably become the trio’s most coveted work amongst collectors. Originally released in 1981 by Tony Owens’ Cyprian Records imprint and distributed from his shop, Seven Leaves Records in Kensal Rise, the single marks one of saxophonist and flautist Courtney Pine’s earliest appearances on record as a member of the backing band Inity Rockers. Available now on Backatcha 45 single sourced from original masters. Website exclusive moving fast at backatcharecords.com... Two exclusive 45s featuring versions of Watch Tower’s ‘Forever, Together’ mixed by Sean P. from the original 1974 multi-track. Limited to 100 copies of each release. Maurice Moore’s first recording session was at Peppermint Studios in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1974, singing lead on ‘Forever, Together’ for Watch Tower’s only release. Written, produced and arranged by Moore, alongside a five-man band and recorded by Gary Rhamy, operating a newly-installed 16-track setup. Peppermint had a reputation for high standards at affordable rates and had a label in-house, which had previously released records by Poobah and Alias Funk & Soul. The following year, local outfit Taste Of Love were in the booth recording their single ’Love Meditation’. “One of the reasons I wanted to start a studio was the abundance of musical talent in this area,” says Rhamy “I was amazed at the number of quality musicians.” Maurice granted Backatcha his surviving tapes in 2018 and Sean has mixed multiple versions of tracks which had no available master. 'Forever, Together' was cut for 45 release on Backatcha twice (BK063 & BK066). However, on each occasion it was decided that changes needed to be made to the mixes; and both versions were shelved before manufacturing. Backatcha has extended the original run of just two white labels for this limited edition special. #ohio #warren #soul #funk #jazz #rock #ballad #maurice #song #seanp #mix #limitededition #whitelabel #45 #vinyl #ditc #love #forever #together #multitrack #master #tape

Released today at backatcharecords.com Jo - Flying 12” w/picture sleeve featuring Vocal and Instrumental mixes. “Flying was written about me seeing the world from above at a time when there was so much tension with wars and the policing politics, I was just looking at the war zones and felt free at the prospect of being high in the sky, free from all the negativity that was happening. Lovers rock had exploded in Britain and it was a breath of fresh air. Back in the day sound systems could string up the giant speakers and that’s when the dances were the best.” - Jo Originally released on Jo & Neville Carnegie's Brixton based label Dove Records in 1985 reissued for the first time by Backatcha and cut from the master tape. #loversrock #london #brixton #reggae #soul #soundsystem #12inch #vinyl #ditc #backatcharecords #dove #jamaica #funk #synth #pop #jazz #balearic #music #universal #flying

One of two releases out today, back-to-back on 45 for the first time, Arlene Bailey’s ‘Let’s Stay In Love’ and ‘Closer To You’. Originally appearing on Bailey’s 1987 debut LP, these two firm favourites sound like they could have been laid down a decade earlier, whilst the rest of the album sounds very much of its time. Both songs were co-written and produced by Arlene and her brother George for A.G.B. Records. Sleeve design by @hydeslovelies Scroll to the last side for an excerpt of Ms. Bailey's cameo appearance in the 1969 film, The Three Golden Serpents. #soul #moments #arlenebailey #mastertapes #ditc #jazz #lounge #fusion #boston #stepper #vinyl #1980s #1970s #1960s

One of two 45 releases today at backatcharecords.com Double-sider from Johnny Davis and producer Reg Hudson (Hudson People) featuring the previously unreleased funk jam ‘Life’s A Party’, coupled with ’Expand Your Mind’, an in-demand mid-80s soul cut recorded in Bavaria. “I had a friend, Manfred Radtke, who had a small studio in Kitzingen, Germany. He offered me the chance to work in his studio and there I began to write songs in the style that I really liked, that came out of my soul and heart. One of my favourite bands was Zapp and they often worked with the voice box. At the time, music was very electronic and groups like Parliament were doing a mixture of smooth funk and electronics, and so I mixed them together to create my tracks.”   (Johnny Davis, 2006) #soul #electric #bass #funk #drummachine #1980s #expandyourmind #vinyl #southcarolina #chicago #bavaria #germany #london #streetsoul #spotlight #balearic
