A delightful discovery while we were in Atrani: the town was a huge influence on the work of MC Escher. Its winding alleys of stairways are featured in several woodcuts and possibly inspired works like Relativity.
And on our hike down from the town of Ravello, where Escher had stayed, we came upon this view on the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, the same one he sketched in 1931. The view from the other side is the scene blending into chessboards, birds, fish, and others in his Metamorphoses
