Het architecten- en kunstenaarsduo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh is al vanaf de start onze artist-in-residence. Met Fictional Ruins presenteren ze een reeks projecten uit de voorbije vijftien jaar. Elk project vertrekt vanuit een vorm van afwezigheid: een architectuur die ontbreekt, onvolledig is of enkel nog in herinnering bestaat. Fictional Ruins is zowel een tentoonstelling als een publicatie. Tijdens deze boekvoorstelling en artist talk gaat Gijs Van Vaerenbergh dieper in op het thema van de ruïne — hun leitmotiv in deze projecten. Ruïnes zijn nooit neutraal, maar worden voortdurend herschreven en geïnterpreteerd. Sholeh Rezazadeh legde een bijzonder parcours af: slechts drie jaar na haar aankomst in Nederland tekende ze het contract voor haar eerste roman De hemel is altijd paars. Ze wordt geprezen om haar kleurrijk taalgebruik, haar weergave van de natuur en haar originaliteit en is nu de eerste internationale huisschrijver van KU Leuven. Voor 10 jaar BAC ART LAB reist Sholeh 's nachts door de wildernis van haar geest. Geen taal of dialoog, alleen beelden die ze vertaalt naar poëzie, hier te horen en te lezen. Rutger Mathys en Oya Bakiroglu weven vloeiende klanklandschappen rond haar dromen. Textielkunstenaar en voormalig BAC ART LAB-resident Bram Van Breda gaat in dialoog met haar poëzie via zijn wandtapijt Down In The Bathypelagic. -- Sholeh Rezazadeh followed a remarkable path as a writer: just three years after arriving in the Netherlands, she signed the contract for her debut novel 'De hemel is altijd paars'. Praised for her vivid language, her rendering of nature and her originality, she is now the first international writer-in-residence at KU Leuven. For 10 jaar BAC ART LAB, Sholeh travels at night through the wilderness of her mind. No language or dialogue only images, which she translates into poetry, here to be heard and read. Musicians Rutger Mathys and Oya Bakiroglu weave fluid soundscapes around her dreams. Textile artist and former BAC ART LAB resident Bram Van Breda enters into dialogue with her poetry through his tapestry Down In The Bathypelagic.

Kevin Trappeniers begeeft zich op het snijvlak van beeldende kunst, performance en ruimtelijke installatiekunst. Met een poëtische blik naar tijd, vergankelijkheid en ecologie creëert hij zintuiglijke omgevingen waarin ruimte, licht, geluid en natuurlijke elementen in dialoog treden. Hij nodigt het publiek uit om stil te staan, aandachtig te kijken en te luisteren. Voor 10 jaar BAC ART LAB brengt hij met Art / Earth, Jöklaminni internationale kunstenaars en wetenschappers samen rond gletsjers en hun lot op een planeet in verandering. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek gaat hand in hand met geleefde, zintuiglijke ervaringen van landschappen in beweging zodat geologische tijd en ecologische onderlinge afhankelijkheid voelbaar en tastbaar worden. Kevin werkt samen met Stijn Demeulenaere, Mattias De Craene, Julie Sjöfn Gasiglia, Vala Sigþrúðar Jónsdóttir, Sigrún Gyða Sveinsdóttir, Nicolas Baeyens en Þóranna Dögg Björnsdóttir. --- Kevin Trappeniers works at the intersection of visual art, performance and spatial installation. With a poetic eye for time, transience and ecology, he creates sensory environments where space, light, sound and natural elements enter into dialogue. He invites audiences to pause, to look carefully and to listen. For 10 years BAC ART LAB, he brings together international artists and scientists with Art / Earth Jöklaminni, a project centred on glaciers and their fate on a changing planet. Scientific research goes hand in hand with lived, sensory experiences of landscapes in motion making geological time and ecological interdependence something you can feel and touch. Omara Poppe (2002) is een Brusselse audiomaker. Ze studeerde Audiovisuele Kunsten: Radio aan RITCS School of Arts en volgt momenteel een master Sociale en Culturele Antropologie aan KU Leuven. In haar werk onderzoekt ze hoe geluid dynamieken zichtbaar kan maken die zich aan het oog onttrekken rond migratie, herinnering, ruimte en (niet-)menselijke relaties. Voor 10 jaar BAC ART LAB vertrekt Omara vanuit haar onderzoek in Duinkerke, waar ze samenwerkte met Mobile Refugee Support. In het vluchtelingenkamp ontwikkelde ze een sonische etnografie op basis van veldopnames, klanktekeningen en kaarten onderzoekend hoe geluid scheidslijnen en sociale relaties vormt én verstoort. Het resultaat is een audioproductie waarin veldopnames en documentaire media samenkomen. Grenzen verdelen het landschap. Geluid maakt ze hoorbaar -- Omara Poppe (2002) is a Brussels-based audio maker. She studied Audiovisual Arts: Radio at RITCS School of Arts and is currently pursuing a master's in Social and Cultural Anthropology at KU Leuven. In her work she explores how sound can make visible what escapes the eye touching on migration, memory, space and (non-)human relations. For 10 jaar BAC ART LAB, Omara draws from her research in Dunkirk, where she collaborated with Mobile Refugee Support. At the refugee camp she developed a sonic ethnography built from field recordings, sound drawings and maps examining how sound shapes and disrupts borders and social relations. The result is an audio production that brings together field recordings and documentary media. Borders divide the landscape. Sound makes them audible.

Alberto Estudillo Ruiz (1985, Cádiz) studeert Kunstgeschiedenis aan KU Leuven en behaalde eerder een doctoraat in Audiovisuele en Beeldende Kunsten aan de Universiteit van Sevilla. In zijn werk onderzoekt hij identiteit, ruimte en tijd in relatie tot het beeld via fotografie en video. Voor 10 jaar BAC ART LAB zijn negen camera's voortdurend in beweging. Pixel per pixel registreren ze de omgeving en genereren een beeld dat zich niet in één moment fixeert, maar zich geleidelijk vormt in de tijd. Het resultaat stelt de fysieke ruimte én de systemen die haar ordenen in vraag. Wie produceert digitale beelden? Dragana Radanović is visueel storyteller en postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan KU Leuven en LUCA School of Arts. In haar werk onderzoekt ze herinnering, kindertijd en activisme op het snijvlak van beeld en woord, tussen analyse en intuïtie. Voor 10 jaar BAC ART LAB brengt ze met Drawing Lines de verhalen van vrouwen uit haar eigen familie naar boven: rebellen, overlevers en alledaagse activisten. Met houtskool op rijstpapier draagt ze hardnekkige geschiedenissen in fragiele materialen. -- Dragana Radanović is a visual storyteller and postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven and LUCA School of Arts. In her work she explores memory, childhood and activism at the intersection of image and word, between analysis and intuition. For 10 years BAC ART LAB she brings with Drawing Lines the stories of women from her own family to the surface: rebels, survivors and everyday activists. With charcoal on rice paper, she carries stubborn histories in fragile materials.

Floriane is een autodidactisch kunstenaar en muurschilder uit Leuven. In haar werk viert ze menselijkheid, queerness en vrouwelijkheid, beïnvloed door haar achtergrond in de sociale en culturele antropologie. Haar portretten vertrekken vanuit een sterke “female gaze” en verkennen elegantie, kracht en sensualiteit, terwijl ze via haar kunst de mensen en plekken die ze ontmoet probeert te begrijpen en te tonen. Voor 10 jaar BAC ART LAB vertrekt Floriane van reisfoto’s van haar ouders uit de jaren ’90 beelden uit een tijd waarin ze alleen aan zichzelf moesten denken, net zoals zij nu. Wat ooit simpele snapshots waren, krijgen door hun compositie en inhoud een nieuwe, artistieke lading. Als dochter kijkt Floriane terug naar deze momenten, en geeft ze vorm aan de herinneringen die tot haar eigen bestaan hebben geleid. — Floriane is a self-taught artist and muralist from Leuven. In her work, she celebrates humanity, queerness, and femininity, influenced by her background in social and cultural anthropology. Her portraits are shaped by a strong “female gaze,” exploring elegance, strength, and sensuality, while using art as a way to understand and portray the people and places she encounters. For 10 Years BAC ART LAB, Floriane starts from travel photos of her parents from the 1990s images from a time when they only had to think about themselves, just as she does now. What were once simple snapshots take on a new artistic meaning through their composition and content. As a daughter, Floriane looks back at these moments, shaping the memories that led to her own existence.

Chonglian Yu is een componist en elektronisch muzikant. Hij werkt aan een doctoraat aan LUCA School of Arts en KU Leuven, en is verbonden aan de onderzoeksgroep Music, Thought, and Technology van het Orpheus Instituut in Gent. Zijn werk beweegt zich tussen elektronische muziek, multimediale installaties en performance, met een bijzondere interesse in extended reality en digitale systemen. Chonglian onderzoekt hoe geluid de ervaring en verbeelding van luisteraars kan sturen, en ontwikkelt speculatieve narratieven rond een cybernetisch geaugmenteerd publiek, inclusief prototypes van experimentele draagbare apparaten. In 10 jaar BAC ART LAB zal hij met The Protocol Room hoorbaar maken wat meestal verborgen blijft. Acht zelfgebouwde speakers communiceren via een eigen protocol. Wanneer dat systeem hapert, hoor je het: fouten, vertragingen en glitches worden geen storingen, maar de kern van de compositie. Waar ligt creativiteit — alleen bij de maker, of ook in de technologie die ons met elkaar verbindt? — Chonglian Yu is a composer and electronic musician. He is pursuing a PhD at LUCA School of Arts and KU Leuven, and is affiliated with the Music, Thought, and Technology research group at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent. His work moves between electronic music, multimedia installations, and performance, with a particular interest in extended reality and digital systems. Chonglian explores how sound can shape the experience and imagination of listeners, and develops speculative narratives around a cybernetically augmented audience, including prototypes of experimental wearable devices. For 10 Years BAC ART LAB, he presents The Protocol Room, making audible what usually remains hidden. Eight self-built speakers communicate through their own protocol. When the system falters, you hear it: errors, delays, and glitches are not disturbances, but become the core of the composition. Where does creativity reside — only in the maker, or also in the technology that connects us?

Lucía Batalla Tuero (2000) is beeldend kunstenaar.  Haar werk bestaat voornamelijk uit (video)installaties met gedroogde planten en andere natuurlijke elementen. Ze onderzoekt hoe ‘natuur’ wordt waargenomen, geordend en verbeeld. In eerdere projecten werkte ze rond de beweging van planten, plantenhorror en het concept van third landscapes. In 10 jaar BAC ART LAB vertrekt ze vanuit het idee van een collectie en kijkt ze naar de logica van rariteitenkabinetten: hoe zulke bonte verzamelingen natuurlijke objecten tonen en ordenen. Samen met haar partner Maarten Lauwers maakte ze een op maat gemaakte kast waarin verschillende plantengroepen samenkomen. Het resultaat oogt als een verzameling hybride vormen die zich moeilijk laten plaatsen. De 18e-eeuwse term “nondescript” verwijst naar wat zich niet laat benoemen of classificeren. - Lucía Batalla Tuero (2000) is a visual artist. Her work mainly consists of (video) installations using dried plants and other natural elements. She explores how “nature” is perceived, organized, and represented. In earlier projects, she has worked around plant movement, plant horror, and the concept of third landscapes. For 10 Years BAC ART LAB, she starts from the idea of a collection and looks at the logic of cabinets of curiosities: how such eclectic assemblages present and organize natural objects. Together with her partner Maarten Lauwers, she created a custom-made cabinet in which different groups of plants come together. The result appears as a collection of hybrid forms that resist easy categorization. The 18th-century term “nondescript” refers to what cannot be named or classified.
