Eight years. A gay daughter she didn’t know she was raising. A civil rights law signed with Sherry standing right beside her. And a promise that she’s not going anywhere.
I’ve been asking for this one for years — an in-person, in-home sit-down with Governor Gretchen Whitmer. This was the year she said yes.
We talked about her LGBTQ+ legacy, what Sherry has taught her about allyship, Pride 2026 and why the fight isn’t over even after she leaves office.
Full interview in the comments — with her dogs making special guest-star appearances!
We can’t wait to share our full interview with @gewhitmer !
Ahead of Pride — and before her term as governor ends in January 2027 — she sat down with Pride Source Executive Editor Chris Azzopardi to talk about the legacy she hopes to leave as an LGBTQ+ ally and what staying in the fight looks like after her time in office. 🫶
You asked — we got the answer. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s (@gewhitmer ) rainbow sweater? She bought it for her gay daughter, Sherry — who didn’t want it. So she wore it for this interview. Then we posted a preview, and the internet went wild.

Lately I’ve gone all in on portraits. Dog portraits too!
There’s an old man in here whose eyes I really love — and whose stache was so fun to paint. Didn’t realize until I finished him how much he reminds me of my grandpa.
There’s one of my niece too. Right on the brink of being a teenager — all that complexity just under the surface.
I have a file on my phone called “Things I want to paint” and I love getting on the couch and scrolling Pinterest to add to it. #art #watercolor
It’s been a long time coming. 🫶

I’ve been painting and drawing older ladies a lot this past year, but this one’s a favorite. She’s vibrant, and I love the texture the oil pastel gives her, but there’s a darkness there too — a kind of sternness that makes you feel like she’s not someone you’d try to fool. #portraiture
I chatted with the unstoppable queen @kathygriffin this week. She’s never been one to shy away from speaking out on the issues she cares about and we covered a lot of ground! Including, obviously, her thoughts on #heatedrivalry.
