The Arizona Republic has named its new restaurant critic. Bahar Anooshahr is no stranger to metro Phoenix. She's been covering dining and nightlife at The Republic since May 2022.
In her story, she talks about being inspired by people who use food as a medium of creativity. She wants to see the already vibrant metro Phoenix culinary scene continue to grow. She wants the restaurants to thrive. And she wants to help the diners make educated decisions about where to spend their dining dollars.
As a critic, Bahar will advocate for and highlight exceptional hospitality, which she believes turns a great meal into something truly memorable.
"I will keep sharing the stories behind the food and putting a spotlight on the people making it. And, as an immigrant, I’m excited to bring a different lens to food criticism."

Malegría Latin Cafe opened in downtown Phoenix in July 2025.
Owner Melina Ruano Serrano said she found the listing for the space online and, after a quick tour, knew right away it was the perfect location for her dream cafe. And she was right. Malegría fits in perfectly with the artsy, Southwestern-heavy vibe of the Grand Avenue Arts District.
Before opening Malegría, Serrano had never owned her own business before. She had worked in the kitchen at The Phoenician and had limited barista experience at Starbucks, but she dreamed of opening her own coffee shop.
"I was either going to buy a house for myself and continue working somewhere else, or do this and focus on my business," Serrano said.
