Happy National Treehouse Day!
While it’s not a widely celebrated holiday, we thought it was the perfect excuse to share this treehouse we spotted during our recent visit to the Cattle Track Arts Compound, where we were lucky enough to get a tour from some of its working artists and residents.
Cattle Track is known for its hand-built, experimental structures scattered throughout the desert property.
Spanning nearly 13 acres, the compound is home to art studios, homes, and workshops, and serves as both a creative community and a cultural landmark in Scottsdale.
If you’ve never visited, we highly recommend checking out our recent post about the tour and heading to cattletrack.org to learn more.

Last week, Scott Jarson spoke at the Shemer Art Center, sharing the story of how Arcadia evolved from its agricultural roots into one of the Valley’s most iconic neighborhoods. His talk highlighted the key influences that shaped its character, from early land use to the architecture we see today.
Having grown up in Arizona, Scott brings both professional expertise and a deeply personal perspective. The presentation also included home movie clips that offer a rare glimpse of Arcadia in the 1950s.
Scroll through the carousel to watch one of these short clips and view a selection of stills.
If you missed this engaging talk, we invite you to explore our Fall/Winter 2024 issue of 𝘋𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 magazine. The issue features a six-page article titled “Scott Jarson’s Arcadia: The Allure of Ranch Homes and the Aroma of Citrus Blossoms,” authored by David M. Brown. All previous issues of our magazine can be found at azarchitecture.com.
A special thanks to Richard Rea at Arcadia Water Company for sharing his knowledge and archival materials with Scott in preparing for the talk.

No, this isn’t Tatooine—this is Cosanti, right here in Arizona, with just one scorching sun. ☀️
Paolo Soleri’s desert architecture feels straight out of 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴: earth-cast forms that feel both futuristic and deeply rooted in the landscape.
We toured Cosanti and Arcosanti last year for a special feature in our Summer 2025 issue of 𝘋𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 magazine. You can read the articles at azarchitecture.com or revisit some of our early 2025 social media posts highlighting these incredible structures.
And yes—no visit is complete without a handmade Soleri windbell, an Arizona original since the 1950s, known for its craftsmanship and distinctive sound.
Cosanti is located at 6433 E Doubletree Ranch Rd, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253. Open Monday–Saturday 9 AM–5 PM, and Sunday 11 AM–5 PM.

On Tuesday, we visited architect Brent Kendle, founder of Kendle Design Collaborative, at his studio at the Cattle Track Arts Compound.
The award-winning boutique architecture firm is based in Scottsdale and operates out of a 1941 adobe ranch house originally built by George Ellis. Their work is often described as regionally inspired modernism, and a central part of their design process involves immersive 3D modeling, allowing clients to virtually experience the space before it is built.
To illustrate this, Brent shared some 3D walkthroughs for their current projects and explained how they are developed based on a comprehensive early site analysis. By integrating terrain, orientation, and daylight studies from the beginning, the team is able to anticipate how spaces will feel, carefully framing views from each window and considering how light moves through the space. These tools help refine design decisions and improve the client’s experience.
Following the presentation, artist Mark McDowell, a longtime Cattle Track resident, led us on a tour of the rest of the compound.
Founded in 1937 by George and Rachael Ellis, Cattle Track began as a homestead and gradually evolved into an artist enclave. Today, it spans roughly 13 acres and consists of mostly hand-built structures made with salvaged materials. It remains an active art community with studios and residences woven throughout the site.
During the tour, Mark McDowell, known for his colored pencil work, introduced fellow artists Brent Bond and Mary Meyer in their studios, as well as Janie Ellis, daughter of the original founders and steward of the property.
On our tour we walked through a historic barn recently relocated to the compound as part of the Scottsdale Arts partnership, which, upon completion, will provide additional art space for the ArtSpark program.
The compound has also had an ongoing relationship with The School of Architecture at Taliesin, a program rooted in hands-on learning.
Still guided by Janie Ellis, Cattle Track continues to evolve while preserving its original spirit. It stands as a rare link to early Scottsdale, offering an intimate view into the city’s creative past and present.
