I’ve been wanting to make a lesbian set forever I just didn’t know what direction I wanted to take them, these turned out to be the biggest love letter to myself, my butchness, and my femme best friend who’s taught me so much about myself and my identity. It’s an honor to be friends with someone who’s femme traits compliment mine so well and have made growing into my identity so much easier. I remember soft launching the butch label to bri last summer and them being so supportive of that and of me.
My favorite qualities about myself are qualities of a butch lesbian. gentle to those closest to me, making sure people get where they need to go safely, carrying heavy things, paying, holding doors, buying flowers. I genuinely enjoy acts of service whether reciprocated or not. In the time I’ve grown into the label I’ve come to realize that being butch is a sociopolitical identity that revolves around healthy masculinity and reshapes it in a way that challenges the patriarchy, not necessarily a specific look.
I strongly uphold the traits of a butch lesbian to uphold the powerful historical label of lesbians before me who wore masculinity so bravely.
queer history depicted accurately without censorship is rare to come across but having read the memoir Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg I was given so much insight on the dykes that came before me and how my protective presence within this queer space has always been. I adore lesbian literature and im so blessed to be able to read so much of it recently. It’s shown me I’m exactly where I’m meant to be and given me new perspectives that have deepened my empathy.
