the museum school, my alma mater, turns 150 years old this year. to support the place that nurtured the sickest parts of my practice...well, until i got back to nyc... i have a work at pace gallery 4/22-4/24. this work is from my thematic apperception test series, the psych test that the court used to order me into therapy. being queer wasn’t easy before stonewall.

when Lane Sell and Erich Erving from shoestring press (love) came to see my show at smack mellon, the double-sided, free-standing drawings seemed perfect for an idea they always wanted to try: a double-sided silk screen and lithography print, printed simultaneously on both sides. i thought they were nuts. they are, but i never say no to any form of experimentation.
the print is GORGEOUS, and mounted in a frame that sits perpendicular to the wall. i'm no fan of frames, and i’ve been at war with the proscenium my whole life, so i LOVE everything about this inventive approach for this piece. it will debut at the brooklyn fine arts print fair at powerhouse arts, opening thursday evening (links in bio.) say hi if you see me. and you’ll want one of these, i promise.
the only memory i have of my maternal grandmother is her having a seance with her neighbors in the dining room. when i was a teenager i studied kabbalah and tarot. when all of my friends were dying around me in 1990 there wasn’t anything i didn’t try, including giving out over 10k of these necklaces with my affinity group along the nyc pride march to conscript everyone there into a spellcasting to end homophobia, racism, sexism and AIDS. when ACT UP kicked off a month of actions to pressure george h.w. bush to change AIDS policies in america, i decided to perform a month-long candle spell with the same group of activists to push for change. bush did eventually improve his AIDS policies. he also threw up on the prime minister of japan.

Mwa presents DRIVEN BY DESIRE a conversation between Avram Finkelstein and Thomas Tomczak on desire and its discontents at New York University. Avram will read spells from the 1990s and Thomas will read a Catholic seminary’s teachings on obsession and possession. The conversation will trace the use–both ancient and contemporary–of functional images and objects in the realm of desires.
Moderated by Phil Falino, a painter based in New Haven, Connecticut.

the correct question to be asking about the american military bombing of a boat in international waters isn’t simply a) was it legal? or b) was it actually occupied by venezuelan drug smugglers?
it’s c) does the episode further support the trump/miller/hegseth contention that we are being invaded by venezuela and the insurrection act is a valid legal and political claim that rationalizes an increased military presence on american streets prior to and during the midterm elections?
