Tis’ the season for JOY! I love pictures because they tell the truth, whatever that may be. It’s been a couple years since we’ve been able to get a family photo in during the holidays for a variety of reasons. I’m usually the one dressing everyone up for the perfect holiday cheer photo shoot for our super jolly holiday cards and newsletter. But for some time now “life has life’d”, as the kids say lol. This year, unexpectedly, we just stumbled on a photo booth in the lobby of church. We had all woken up at different times and arrived in separate cars. Just before we were about to leave, we decided to take a quick picture. It wasn’t until I saw our photo that I realized: 1 - we had all unintentionally color coordinated 2 - we were all individually full of joy I’ve learned over time that smiles carry our present truths. Some hold pain. Some hold strength. Some hold gratitude and so on…. Every smile is genuine, but the season determines the meaning. I am so grateful that, in this season, every smile in my home holds JOY!! And I don’t take one tooth or dimple for granted! 🎄 😊 This holiday, I pray that your smiles are seen and that you receive the kind of love you need most! Merry Christmas from the Sneeds! In my filmmaker era 🎞️ 😃 Gods timing is divine! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to not only tell the story of this historic community in Baltimore but to become a part of it. The unfinished highway that divided it will no longer be its legacy. To be selected as a part of this incredibly talented group of creatives is an honor. I literally can’t wait to support every single person. Thank you to @saulzaentzinnovationfund for meticulously curating such an incredible experience for me to embark upon in the coming months! My journey as an artist has been a windy, beautiful, jagged road that I am very much still on and wouldn’t trade for the world. Grateful for this moment. Grateful for what’s already prepared for me. There are moments in life when time stands still and everything must pause. Yesterday, alongside some the people who were a crucial part of my formation, we honored the life and doctoral transition of our sister Dr Jimisha Relerford. She was celebrated in what felt like the Church of Mish - at Howard surrounded by books, intellect, genuine connection, family and of course her boy. Mish, I just remember how resolute you were about where you were going from the moment you knew you were pregnant. You were young but so committed to making him a part of the dream and not an obstacle. I’m sure you weren’t tryna inspire nobody but you did lol. I never got to tell you, but watching you move gave me the resolve I needed to fight for my career AND my baby when I got pregnant sooner than expected after moving to LA. I always say that my daughter IS the dream. That spirit came from quietly watching your hustle and yall epic mother/son Halloween costume tradition. To watch him receive your doctoral hood wrecked me and filled me with pride all at once. You did it sis! Jimisha, your celebration confirmed what I’d always felt from the moment we met…you been here before girl. You moved with a gravitas and realness that is hard to define. And you lived life to the full. I’m so grateful that you were loved so well. You deserved it. I’m so grateful that you emptied yourself out for those around you. We all needed it. I’m so grateful that your words and your life have had a widespread lasting impact. You are heavy and a legacy like that needs a lot of hands to carry it. In the words of Bell Hooks “Love empowers us to live fully and die well. Death becomes, then, not an end to life but a part of living” Cheers to you living a life of love! Check what you see… In my little neighborhood, one of Americas historic ones, there is so much to be restored. And yet, there is also so much that has already seen restoration. In 1976 under President Lyndon Johnson’s Model Cities Program, the rec center in Poppleton was first established. Since then, like the community, this family-centered recreational space has seen its fare share of blight and divestment. Now under current City leadership, this neighborhood has a new narrative. Soon I’ll be able to walk with my kids 5 minutes to this community pool. This is the Baltimore I see on a daily basis. I’m grateful for all of the little lights being turned on throughout the City….one neighborhood at a time.
