Marius Flothuis (1914-2001)- Aubade for flute solo opus 19a. (1944)
Marius Flothuis composed Aubade , a morning love song, while imprisoned in Vught. It was written for the occasion of the birthday (14 April 1944) of his friend and fellow prisoner Everard van Royen.
‘Aubade’ was first performed by Everard himself at the camp and later near the barbwire fence separating the men’s and women’s camps. One of the woman prisoners, Tineke Wibaut-Guilonard, described that event: “At the corner, just a few meters from the fence, on the women’s quarter side, a crowd of women was standing, breathlessly listening, close to each other, surrounding Guusje, Everards wife. After the last tones there was silence, a deep silence. Then from the women’s camp the ‘Ave Maria” is heard, sung by the bright girl’s voice of Louise de Montel,‘the Nightingale of Vught’.
This was one of those moments, that we as prisoners of Vught forgot the reality of our situation. A moment of hope and confidence.”

That escalated a bit 😅
In the past 24 hours this whole “flute challenges” thing kind of took on a life of its own. A *lot* of people joined, wrote, started the challenges — really didn’t expect it to move this fast.
There are already 11 out there, 3 new ones since yesterday:
Vibrato Lab, Double Tonguing Jumpstart, and a Mozart Concerto Challenge are now up, alongside the others.
Same idea as before — nothing big, just something you can actually do every day without overthinking it.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks. It’s really nice to see this becoming a shared thing.

Big emotions in Amsterdam.
Tal picked three little yellow flowers and, beaming, ran to the center of the crowd, and placed a flower beside each shiny stone.
Victor (Dicky), Louis (Witje), ages 10 and 8, and their father Ben — funny boys who once lived in that very house — were murdered in the Holocaust.
Yesterday, we placed stones for ten of my family members who lived in homes across this city I know so well. They were deported, or caught while trying to hide or escape.
We honored their lives by laying Stolpersteine — stumbling stones.
Standing where they once lived, I imagined them playing in the same square where Tal and another child laughed just moments before. I hope people will stumble and think of them playing there too.
Never again. We have to learn the lesson from this. We have to carry our eyes back and forth from these shiny stones to our current lives and make their memory to a reminder for us to be more humane, to fight cruelty, including our own, with humanism.
Having the current residents join us with their children and dogs, and especially being honored by members of the dear Van Dooren family — who courageously hid my aunt during the war — made this morning truly unforgettable.

🎶 Solo Snippets- finding new. Weird sounds with composer Uri Shreter in his piece for a prepared (!) Flute&elec. Was quite an adventure. Never imagined such sounds bursting out of me 🤪
