The Solo Recital with @adamgolkapianist is in just a few days!
The program opens with sonatas by two towering figures whose works shaped the course of classical music, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 24 and Brahms’ Sonata No. 2.
From the architectural brilliance of Ludwig van Beethoven and the emotional depth of Johannes Brahms, the program then steps into the bold, fragmented sound world of Arnold Schoenberg before arriving at the dazzling virtuosity of Chopin.
You’ll hear Schoenberg’s Three Piano Pieces, Op. 11, followed by Chopin’s Twelve Etudes, Op. 25—an arc that moves from Classical clarity through Romantic richness into the striking language of modernism and beyond.

One of the monumental works on Masterworks 7: Unbroken is the 10th Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Much of Shostakovich’s artistic life unfolded under the oppressive rule of Joseph Stalin. For nearly two decades, the composer endured harassment, censorship, and the constant threat of arrest or worse, as his music often failed to align with the regime’s expectations. His Symphony No. 9, in particular, was publicly condemned. Only after Stalin’s death did Shostakovich return to the symphonic form, composing his Symphony No. 10 after an eight-year hiatus.
In this work, Shostakovich employs his musical signature, DSCH, drawn from his initials and the German spelling of his name, “Schostakowitsch.” This motif corresponds to the notes D, E-flat, C, and B, allowing him to embed his own identity directly into the music. Many scholars interpret the symphony as a portrait of personal struggle and eventual triumph, with this recurring motif representing the composer himself.
Still, debate persists over whether the symphony is meant as a direct response to Stalin or a broader reflection on suffering and resilience. That interpretation is perhaps best left to the listener. What remains clear, however, is that Symphony No. 10 marks a powerful reemergence. An artistic renewal from one of the 20th century’s most compelling symphonic voices.
“I wanted to convey human feelings and passions. Let them listen and decide for themselves.” —Shostakovich, at the Union of Composers, 1954
Our season finale, Masterworks 7: Unbroken, will open with a newly commissioned work by composer Karena Ingram. We’re honored to bring this powerful piece to life. Hear directly from the composer in this video as she shares more about the inspiration behind the work.
