Work is a never-ending task list with chronically-overdue items, and the impossibility of actually “catching up” is discouraging and de-motivating. How do you motivate yourself to climb a mountain whose peak is un-reachable?
Lawyer here. Just as the title says, work is comprised of a massive task list. Anywhere between a third to half of those items are at least technically overdue at all times, and it is literally impossible to reach a point where all tasks are complete. In fact, my boss once told me that it is a silly goal to try and attain, “because that means you don’t have enough work”, and once I get even remotely close to completing everything, he just dumps a few dozen more tasks on me. Some of you might be horrified by this work style, but keep in mind this is NYC, and this level of pressure is not uncommon.
For those who choose to comment, please keep in mind that this is not a job I can simply leave or take steps towards leaving at the moment. Comments along these lines will not be helpful. Nor can I change anything about the amount of tasks that my boss gives me. That too is not something that will not change anytime soon.
