Last day of Melusine showing at @lovo_galerie . Melusine’s dress with drawings digitally printed on the fabric and ten sons of Melusine in form of glass figures each represented by a different animal. Melusine is a mythical figure known for her ability to transform between human and serpent forms. Melusine’s 10 sons all carry some animalistic features due to Melusine’s magic. As a result, she is blamed by her husband for poisoning the royal bloodline. Well, her magic built him a wealthy kingdom. In September 2024, artists Lucie Kordacova and Eva Novakova created a performance piece inspired by the folkloric figure of Melusine. The performance, Melusine: Whispers of the Glass Serpent, was invited to the Glass Festival of Biot in France to be presented for the first time and will now be shown at Crystal Valley Week Festival in Liberec. Drawings inspired by Melusine’s story were printed onto fabric and hand crafted into costumes which were combined with 10 glass objects which symbolise Melusine’s sons and the animal features they inherited from her magic. We used a lost-wax technique to develop the kiln-casting glass objects made principally from uranium glass which changes colour ranging from grey, green, yellow to pink shades depending on how the sun lands on the glass. These objects are chained together and wrapped around the performer portraying Melusine. The choreography describes Melusine’s life in stages from powerful fairy through to Queen and mother, and finally transformed into a serpent with dragon wings to flee from her husband’s betrayal. The performance is scheduled as part of the Crystal Valley week, in Liberec’s Tram Depo DPMLJ. Welcome drinks from 6pm onwards for a 7pm start of the programme, 29 August. @kordacovalucie @avenovak @crystalvalleyweek Images by @bfstudio__

MELUSINE: WHISPERS OF THE GLASS SERPENT 🌊 Is a new performance piece inspired by the folkloric figure of Melusine. Drawings inspired by Melusine’s story were printed on fabric, crafted into costumes and combined with objects made from glass. In the legend Melusine’s ten sons were all born with some animal features which we have incorporated into the work as glass objects. There are, for example, a child with one eye, an animal’s claw, hairy nose or one with a boar’s giant tooth. We used a lost-wax technique to develop the kiln-casting glass objects made of mainly uranium coloured glass. This process generates an effect by which the glass changes colour depending on the light source, ranging from grey, green, yellow to pink shades. These objects are chained together and wrapped around Melusine. For the costumes we used drawings based on Melusine which were then printed onto a specially formulated paper to transfer ink onto fabric using high pressure and heat. The result is that the dyes are transferred from the pressing paper directly onto the fabric. The fabric is now completely washable and 100% fade-proof, the ink and the fabric are now one item, rather than the dye sitting on the fabric. That is also why this type of print does not suit natural fibers such as cotton or silk, their fibers do not bond well with the inks. Additional elements were added to the costumes by hand drawing directly onto the fabric, or via the intermediary of heat resistant paper, with melted adhesives allowing the drawings to be recreated as 3D dimensional patterns. 🌊🌬️🌊 1- Performance, photo @bfstudio__ Biot, France, 2024 2- Glass objects, production picture by @avenovak 2024 3- Ten Son’s of Melusine, glass object, photo @kordacovalucie 2024 4- Print on textile, photo @kordacovalucie 2024 5- Drawing on heat resistant paper, detail, photo @kordacovalucie 2024 6- Costume for Melusine, wip, photo @kordacovalucie 2024 This work was produced with financial assistance of the European Union @creativeeurope @goetheinstitut The view expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of European Union. Last week @avenovak and I debuted our new performance piece inspired by the folkloric figure of Melusine. Drawings inspired by Melusine were printed on fabric from which the costumes were crafted and combined with objects and features made from glass. In the legend Melusine is a human-water spirit hybrid who marries a king. They have ten sons, all of whom are born with some animal features which we have incorporated as glass objects. Melusine is eventually betrayed by her husband and put on trial - she grows dragon wings and flees the castle never to be seen again. As the legend travels across cultures we see new elements appearing - in the Czech Republic Melusine is the name given to the wind as it howls through the chimney, Melusine’s cries as she searches for her children. In our performance Melusine represents the disharmony between the human and natural world we see reflected in the world around us: Melusine as nature betrayed by the hubris of humanity. 🌊 This work was produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. @creativeeurope @goetheinstitut The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union. We were selected among 27 artists to present our new project, a story of Melusine. “Whispers of the Glass Serpent” is a performance set in Biot, France, reimagining the myth of Melusine through the use of glass, costumes and movement. The performance embodies different aspects of Melusine, for example her serpent tail and the various animal features symbolising Melusine’s sons. Melusine is a mythical figure known for her ability to transform between human and serpent forms; a creature half-water spirit and half-human, who embodies the concept of shapeshifting, representing fluidity and the seamless blending of different identities. Glass, similarly, is a shapeshifter in the world of materials; it can be moulded, blown, and sculpted into a myriad of forms while maintaining its inherent properties of transparency and reflection. It could be reshaped again and again, and, in this, these two shapeshifters converge and separate. The performers embodying Melusine offer up the animal parts of their costumes, putting an end to Melusine’s shapeshifting, and representing the disharmony between the human and natural world we see reflected in the world around us.🌊🌊🌊 This work was produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. @creativeeurope @goetheinstitut The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
