MELUSINE: WHISPERS OF THE GLASS SERPENT 🌊
Is a new performance piece inspired by the folkloric figure of Melusine. Drawings inspired by Melusine’s story were printed on fabric, crafted into costumes and combined with objects made from glass.
In the legend Melusine’s ten sons were all born with some animal features which we have incorporated into the work as glass objects. There are, for example, a child with one eye, an animal’s claw, hairy nose or one with a boar’s giant tooth. We used a lost-wax technique to develop the kiln-casting glass objects made of mainly uranium coloured glass. This process generates an effect by which the glass changes colour depending on the light source, ranging from grey, green, yellow to pink shades. These objects are chained together and wrapped around Melusine.
For the costumes we used drawings based on Melusine which were then printed onto a specially formulated paper to transfer ink onto fabric using high pressure and heat. The result is that the dyes are transferred from the pressing paper directly onto the fabric. The fabric is now completely washable and 100% fade-proof, the ink and the fabric are now one item, rather than the dye sitting on the fabric. That is also why this type of print does not suit natural fibers such as cotton or silk, their fibers do not bond well with the inks. Additional elements were added to the costumes by hand drawing directly onto the fabric, or via the intermediary of heat resistant paper, with melted adhesives allowing the drawings to be recreated as 3D dimensional patterns.
