Estranha Forma - Catarina Barbosa @awa_baptiste_catarina @cat._barbosa When Catarina and I first worked together, many years ago, Catarina was dancing for another choreographer. It was the first date on a short UK tour. It was one of those shows where technically it felt like everything was going wrong from the moment I walked in. Things I was told would be there were not, things were broken or not working properly, the rigging was so slow we were behind the whole time. It generally felt like a nightmare but we got to show only for my heart to break. As Catarina moved down stage right to perform a momentary solo, she was to be lit by a pristine white spotlight. Sadly it was in the days of scrollers! The scroller got stuck and she was lit in bright PINK! No one else there really remembers it but it has stayed in my head all these years. So when we started discussing this project it felt inevitable I was going to light her intentionally in Pink! We found the perfect moment. Next up were at Opderschmelz - 24th February 2026 The second picture is Catarina being the front page superstar she is. Also in PINK! Estranha Forma - Catarina Barbosa It felt like a real honour to be asked to design the lighting for this stunning solo piece by Catarina. We premiered the piece in Luxembourg at Trois C-L back in November. A beautiful and incredibly brave piece of work. As a dancer Catarina never fails to amaze me and as a choregrapher she never ceases to surprise me. We’ll be back in Luxembourg in February to present the work again. And hopefully we’ll get to show the work all over the place. Attuning - Meera Patel Production / Residency @pdsw_org I’ll share some pictures of the previews/premiere when I get hold of some. But this was our production week down in Bournemouth in November. Always such a privilege to be given time and space to explore wild and wonderful ideas. I met @_meera when I was re-lighting a show they were audio transcribing. As we shared pizza on a hotel floor I discovered not only are they quite a dancer themselves but also a choreographer with a very focussed process of bringing in audience who are blind and/or D/deaf. Exploring ways to make dance works that can be accessible in this manner is definitely a challenge but also feels super important. #dance #lighting #lightingdesign #videodesign #production

I remember I wasn’t very well that week, endlessly rolling out shinny floor a rainy Barcelona probably didn’t help. But hiding behind crash mats triggering the music and getting to see the marvel on the youngsters faces was a joy. We ended the week with a few shows @mercatflors by which point I was very ill, but they were a super good team and an absolutely great venue. GO! by @corpsinsitu Back in October, I joined back up with GO! for a week of shows at Théâtre Le Château du Rocher in Creil 🇫🇷 Having spent a few weeks with them in Edinburgh during the summer. Was a joy to see them back in relative home territory with 100s of young people at every show. A really cool show for young people but me of those rare shows for young people that is also enjoyable for adults. With the ever superb @villeoinonen & @cie.les.affames who were not only great, but great company and very accommodating with my very radical (for the French) not eating animals dietary requirements. Mary’s Daughter - Catarina Barbosa @awa_baptiste_catarina Kinnekbond de Mamaer, Luxembourg Not the best photographs I’ve ever taken but in September I had the absolute pleasure of heading back to Luxembourg to re-light this incredible show by Catarina Barbosa with 2 of my already favourite dancers, Catarina herself and the ever wonderful @lori_lorenzi New to me and the piece was the amazing @lolakervro who learnt the piece so quickly and was absolutely mesmerising. I lit the trailer earlier in the year so I already new how great and powerful the piece was but felt like a real pleasure to be involved with this project and I hope many more people get to witness it. Early summer was taken up by the creation of, premiere of and touring of One Sky - @pagravdanceco With no lights and no video, it was definitely something out of my comfort zone. However, such a lovely company so they sweet talked me in the joining up. A challenge, yes, but also it’s a beautiful production so was happy to be involved. As summer ends, I’m heading back indoors and I’m handing the project over. You can catch the show for the last time this year up in Stratford for @gdifestival on Saturday 6th September. Had the absolute pleasure of being up in Edinburgh for the fringe with @corpsinsitu looking after their performance of ‘GO!’. It’s one of those rare pieces that is made for young people but is also enjoyed by adults.
