From the first ever Techno Animal live show, Duchess of York, Leeds 1992. L-R: Kev Martin, Damian Bennett, Justin Broadrick. Picture taken by me from behind mixing desk where I was on front of house sound duties.
From 1988, around the time the self-titled EP was released. Taken by Richard Davis who lived in a room above us, he also took the first promo shots of Godflesh, one of which was used on the EP’s inner sleeve. First time I’ve ever seen this!
Contact sheets from 1992 of photographs taken from movies that were used for the Pure LP and Cold World EP. The anomaly here is a few shots of Vincent Price that were not intended for recordings, but for personal use as I intended to make some postcards with them.
Main. Polaroids, 1993. Main was formed after the dissolution of Loop, and initially was just Robert Hampson and Scott Dowson. I was part of Main from 1992 till 1993, joining after the release of their first two EP’s Hydra and Calm. Together we recorded the EP’s Dry Stone Feed and Firmament, followed by the first full length LP Motion pool. We debuted live in Utrecht in Holland then a show at the Garage in London. I left in 1993 as I’d planned to quit being a musician altogether, though that didn’t happen till much later. The Polaroids were taken before digital photography so photographers would take a Polaroid as a test shot. These were taken by the great Tom Sheehan who took most of the Loop and Main promo shots. Also included is an interview that appeared in the now defunct Lime Lizard magazine from October 1993.
My handwritten list of songs that were programmed on our Alesis HR16 drum machine that would be used at gigs. Next to the song title is the programme number, and the numbers on the right is the bpm of each track, which had to be selected too. What’s interesting about this is it shows the order in which the songs were written, including songs for the never released Tiny Tears ep. Clearly Head Dirt was the first song written for Streetcleaner. Why there is no song 13 I’ve no idea..maybe we were superstitious?
The HR16 blew up on our first tour of the US, and was replaced with the newer SR16.
Have been scanning loads of old photographs, gig flyers etc. during this lockdown and have decided to post a few..Starting with these original pictures i took for the Godflesh self titled EP/Mini album. The first two will be familiar, but the last one of Dennis Hopper taken from the movie Tracks was not used.
