We dubbed this look “Nightmare Gladys”. This was a crowd favorite on the Weapons set even though we knew it was going to manifest as very quick jump scares in the film. Zach wanted a “heightened” Aunt Gladys look that could only exist in a nightmare. Special Effects Designer Jason Collins and Makeup Department Head Leo Satkovich really played with characteristics that would pop in low light such as bright pops of textured color applied asymmetrically over her subtle prosthetics. This wig was 1 of 7 Aunt Gladys wigs that Hair Department Head Melizah Wheat had prepared and ready to go at any given moment and was stored upside down to retain its gravity-defying style! Sweet dreams 👹

The response to Weapons has been overwhelming. Our hearts are full at the positive reception of the film’s creepiest and cookiest character: Aunt Gladys. Gladys was a labor of love between Zach Cregger, the Costume Designer Trish Summerville, Special FX designer and owner of @autonomousfx2005 Jason Collins, Makeup Department Head Leo Satkovich, Hair Department Head Melizah Wheat and of course—Amy Madigan. Through constant collaboration, Zach’s direction, many laughs and a few cringes, Gladys was born! We don’t want to spoil the fun for those that are seeing Weapons this weekend; however, we want to acknowledge all the love and want you to be on the lookout for more Aunt Gladys posts in the weeks to come!

ELLE spoke to special makeup effects designer Jason Collins about his work on Margo’s Got Money Troubles. Collins recently created the makeup for the Oscar-winning Amy Madigan’s Aunt Gladys in Weapons, and his company, Autonomous FX, is equally adept at realistic body rigs for births as they are at more out-there horror designs. ‘FOR ALL MANKIND’ - @appletv - Do you ever wonder what a frozen murder victim looks like on the surface of Mars? With no space suit to boot?!! Well.. our show certainly did!! We created two separate bodies and a makeup for this gag. The mission: a body is found on the surface of Mars, exposed to the elements. When they bring him in to a pressurized cabin he starts to ‘defrost and deflate’ exposing the victim’s identity! Tall order! For this we made two separate bodies that were at full bloat and half bloat with a transitional makeup that completed the job with deflating bladders! Here we see the bodies! Art direction supervised by @jcollinsmakeup and @erinkoplow The heads were done in Zbrush by the great @davidgrasso66 working from designs by Madison Burger. The heads were then printed and molded by the super awesome @aaron_globerman ad the bodies were beautifully constructed by @agent10fromplanet_x who painted them as well. Hair work by @helgaboies and @jmakkee with eyes by the always great @fourthsealstudios while on set wrangling and supervision by the always great @shelbymichael_mua show and shop supervision by @mccarty13 who makes sure it all gets done!

In “The Bride!” prosthetic makeup artists Jason Collins and Scott Stoddard teamed up with Christian Bale and Maggie Gyllenhaal to bring an elaborate backstory to every hand-crafted hair, stitch, and incision. Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is the gift that keeps on giving. Or rather, the character that keeps on inspiring star-studded portrayals in IMAX. From James Whale’s canon 1931 horror flick to Guillermo Del Toro’s recent Oscar-winning drama, Shelley’s Creature has taken on many different forms and actors, each varying in their faithfulness to the source material. In Maggie Gyllenhaal’s latest rendition of the gothic novel, “The Bride!”, the human outshines the horror with Christian Bale playing a 1930s version of the monster called “Frank.” Link to full article with @thesetsetofficial in bio!

The Bride! (now in theaters) reanimates Frankenstein for another cinematic go-round in which he partners with Jessie Buckley’s title character, a dead party girl possessed by the spirit of Mary Shelley who’s brought back to life after Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) and Frank (Christian Bale) dig her up from a pauper’s grave. Together, Ida the Bride and Frank go to movies, kill bad guys, and dance their way through a crime spree stretching from Depression-era Chicago to New York. Buckley’s shock-blonde Bride sports a splotch of black vomit on her cheek, while Frank’s mangled face pushes iconic Frankenstein imagery to finely detailed extremes. To transform Bale into the iconic creature, writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal enlisted Emmy winners Jason Collins and Scott Stoddard, whose collective credits include Pam & Tommy, The Mandalorian, and Weapons. “We didn’t want to go super monster-y,” says Special Effects Co-Designer and Applicator Stoddard. “We wanted it to feel like Frank’s living with what he has, as weird as it looks, and yet he’s still got this aura where you feel for him as a character.” Special Makeup Effects Prosthetic Fabrication Supervisor Collins, speaking from his Autonomous F/X company in Los Angeles, joined Stoddard to talk about chewed-off ears, broken noses, and the challenges of designing a monster in California while filming him in New York.
