Credits rolling on 15 years of @lunardiskorecords . I was driving recently when Andy got in touch to let me know the lads were wrapping up, and the news sent me off down memory lane. I started gathering my thoughts and compiling an epic and unreadable history of how I first found the label and where I first met the lads, but the details took me further and further from the heart of things as I scribbled.
Music for me is an inner world, an unfolding landscape, and something I donât really understand (may it ever remain so!) Lunar Disko for me was a series of relationships and experiences. You guys encouraged and supported me in my explorations of that inner landscape. You helped me to bring it out into the world, and share it with other people. You taught me about reams and reams of new music. You introduced me to so many cool people, experiences and places, in Dublin, in Ireland and abroad. We partied and put on gigs together. We drove up and down the country in cars stuffed with records and synths. We listened to very loud acid in very dark rooms. We walked bleary eyed through empty streets in the morning. Through all of this my abiding memory is of laughter.
Looking back to when I put out those first records, I see in myself someone who yearned for connection, but who was very unsure of himself and didnât really know how to just⊠be. Thank God I met you guys when I did. Thank you for your generosity and friendship, for the records we did, for the experiences we had. Shortly before I put out my first record, I didnât know what to call it and was wracking my brains. One day, walking down OâConnell Street, thinking about nothing in particular and it came to me: âIn It For The Moneyâ. The title made me laugh, because it was so clearly the opposite of why we were in it. Why were we in it? We were in it for the only thing that matters, the only thing thatâs true, the only thing that lasts, we were in it out of love. I hoped to play a live set at the party this wkd, but as it turns out, I can't be there. So, what can I say? The only thing that matters: Andy, Barry, Aoife, I love you guys. Thx, Jonny.
For anyone aimlessly lurking around Dublin (or otherwise bereft) next Friday 15th September, I will be playing a set of new (or some new, anyway) acoustic pieces in Walter's, Dun Laoghaire. Thx to @zoid999 / @ultimateschoolofmusic for the invite đ Small enough capacity methinks, but still some spots available. Link for tickets in bio etc. Cheerio đ
P.s.: Death does not exist.
Massive thanks to everyone who came to listen to the set last night. Was an honour to play, and to a very sound audience, nice one everybody. Cheers @lankumdublin , @foggy_notions , @umackdublin , @vicar_st , for a deadly night altogether.
Thx a million to everyone who came out for the launch last night. Hypnotic visuals from fear an tĂ @mrdonaldineen , pristine audio by @guerrillasounds , and a beautiful performance from @landless_music_dublin (I even got to play a spot of one-notey church organ), and nice one @solar_bones for the snaps. A special night indeed, delighted. Cheers everybody.
Go for launch đ 8pm on Friday 21 April 2023 at the Pepper Canister Church, Mount Street, Dublin: Make Me an Island Live w/@mrdonaldineen to launch the new LP, with special guests @landless_music_dublin ! Phew. Gonna be a most special night đ
Link for tickets in bio.
Very excited to announce that I'll be supporting the @lankumdublin lads in Vicar Street on 31 May with a spot of nimble lute warbling on the acoustic and lap steel. Will be a bit mental to play there. What could possibly go wrong? *Guitars immediately explode* All sold out methinks. See yous there! đŹđ
Sending a big fat cheers to everyone who tuned in to @doyou.world last wk, and to @doyoubabyyy and Oscar for looking after me. Likewise to Noreen, Marv, Sonny and all at @strangerthanparadiserecords for the warm welcome - absolute legends - it was a dream to be in the shoppe with you guys and to get to play songs for everyone. Whole thing was an honour, and a pleasure to catch up and check in w/friends old and new. In slightly more glum news, next wk's gig is postponed, but planning on putting something together again with Landless soon, so stay tuned đ» Link to listen back to the show with Charlie is in the bio. Hugs y'all, bon wkd.
Thx a million everyone who came to the gig in @plugdrecords on Saturday. For any London people, am going on world tour of Hackney this Friday 3 March. Gonna be playing the acoustic and waxing lyrical with @doyoubabyyy for @doyou.world breakfast fayre on Friday morning. Then playing in-store for my buddies @strangerthanparadiserecords that evening from 6-8pm. Tune in, drop by, say hello etc đ
A New Directive From The Bureau Of Compulsory Entertainment LP is out March 6th on @allcityrecordsandlabel . Pre-hors d'oeuvre on All City Bandcamp (in bio) for vinyl, cassette, digital and tees etc. Cheers!
Stumbled upon this tape at home recently, and digitised just the other day. It contains one song, recorded 14 years ago today, on 10 January 2009 in the little flat where I lived in Dublin. I was jamming away on the machines that evening when I got a call to tell me that RuairĂ, a very dear friend, had passed away suddenly. Me and RuairĂ had been out together the night before, and were listening to music late back at my place, when he said he wanted to go home to his own bed, cos he felt he had a bit of a cold. I sometimes wonder what conversation he had with the taxi man who drove him home. I remember as he was stepping out into the blackness of the landing outside my apartment I thought to myself "tell him you love him". A silly thought I figured, and so I didn't say anything. That's always bothered me, even though I know he knew anyway. The track here cuts out suddenly as I press stop on the sequencer to answer the phone and hear the bad news. Strange and melancholic to find this tape recently, and to be suddenly transported back to a very particular time and place. Distant and immediate all at once. Tempus fugit, RIP RuairĂ. Legend.
Happy Christmas everyone, farewell 2022. Thx to family, friends, colleagues, coaches, mentors, elders, teachers, training partners and all the people in my life who are with me along the road. Cheers likewise to everybody who has supported and given me a platform to share my music this year. The apocalypse rolls on, see u in 2023.
