I won this major award 🏆 So thankful!! 🇺🇸The Notable Social Studies Trade Book Awards are an annual project of NCSS and CBC running since 1972. This award list features K-12 annotated titles published in the previous calendar year that are exceptional books for use in social studies classrooms, selected by social studies educators. The book review committee is appointed by NCSS. The selection committee looks for books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text. National Council for the Social Studies engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. The membership includes K-12 classroom teachers, faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies. CBC is dedicated to supporting the children’s publishing industry through programming that connects and educates publishing professionals, advocates for a more inclusive industry, and shines a light on the books, creators, and resources available for young readers. Thank you, @storytimewithstephanie . Thank you for this delicious review!! 🍪❤️ I appreciate the time you take to read all of my books! A story with universal appeal, What’s in the Cookie Tin? by Yolanda T. Marshall and Golnoush Moini, will be a story every reader can relate to! 🍪 Three things we ❤ about this book: Every reader will have a cookie tin story. Maybe the story is similar to this one, or maybe it’s a little different, but just about every household has a mystery cookie tin, and all readers will make connections to this story. - Yolanda T. Marshall has created a wonderful intergenerational story that is unexpected. The story was flipped to what may be expected making it really fun for readers. - Golnoush Moini’s illustrations are beaming. The faces of all the characters are bright and beautiful and invite readers to join the story and tell their own cookie tin stories. 🍪 What’s in the Cookie Tin? is a picture book published by Chalkboard Publishing for readers ages 4 and up. 🍪 Full thoughts from the link in my bio. 🍪 #StorytimeWithStephanie #RaiseAReader #IReadCanadian #KidsBookstagram #WhatsInTheCookieTin #PictureBook #SewingKit #cookietin #danishcookies @chalkboardpublishing @golnoush_moini

Author Yolanda Marshall popped by the CBC Kids studio to chat with Cottonball about her book: My Soca Birthday Party. It’s about Anne, who loves the sound of Caribbean soca music and West Africa’s spicy jollof rice — so her friends celebrate her birthday with a party combining Caribbean and African cultures. And Cottonball and Yolanda even have a dance party of their own! #ChildrensBooks #PictureBooks #CaribbeanBooks #AfricanBooks #CBCBooks

#Repost @storytimewithstephanie Yolanda T. Marshall and Daria Lavrova honour many men, whose names are likely unfamiliar, in Marching North, with a story of their courage and bravery. 🥁 Three things we ❤️ about this book: - Yolanda T. Marshall shares the names and stories of many prominent heroes who left their home countries in the Caribbean to join the fight for Canada. - It’s an important story for us adults who are trying to impart stories to young readers to ensure that readers are learning about all the people who fought for Canada. - Daria Lavrova’s illustrations are as beautiful and colourful as the island homes of these soldiers while also honouring their legacies. 🥁 Marching North is a picture book for readers ages 6 and up, published by Chalkboard Publishing. 🥁 #BookishCanadians #KidsBookstagram #IReadCanadian #RaiseAReader StorytimeWithStephanie MarchingNorth Caribbean WarVeterans PictureBook NonFiction

My cousin, Latoya, was a fighter as a child. She was short and fierce! No one dared to bully her! When I moved to Canada, we kept in touch. I remember the day she obtained an American visa and arrived in New York… I flew there immediately to spend time with her. I was so happy to see her. We weren’t children any more. I was very proud of the woman she had become. My cousin put up a good fight, but we lost her. Tonight, I feel numb.

Available at @barbadosmuseum Gift Shop. "Marching North" Children's book (ages 4-12) When Aunty Evangelina gifts Abiola an old compass, it becomes more than just a keepsake; it symbolises direction, courage, and identity. She introduces Abiola to the remarkable legacy of Black Caribbean soldiers who served and fought for Canada during the First and Second World Wars. These men travelled from the warmth of their Caribbean nations to foreign battlefields, facing prejudice and hardship while remaining determined to serve with honour. Many returned to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, and community leaders. They were true heroes whose resilience helped shape Canada’s history. This beautifully illustrated book not only inspires kids to stand up for what’s right but also educates and encourages them to appreciate the contributions of the remarkable Caribbean born soldiers. #Caribbeanhistory #CaribbeanSoldiers #Caribbeancontributions #decoloniseyourbookshelf #caribbeanchildrensbook
