4k vertical meter splitboard challenge.
There's a bit of a story behind this one.
Earlier in 2025 I tried to apply to patrouille des glaciers race (one of the largest skitouring races in the world). After reading all the rules, it seemed that I could apply with a splitboard. After attempting to do so, I was met with a decline saying that it's not possible to complete the race with a splitboard. 🤷♂️
It's a bit weird to see this kind of attitude in human powered mountain sports..
Anyways, I was curious how my body would feel after 4k vertical on a splitboard. Not too bad ha. And I'm fairly sure that the race route is doable on splitboard.
We wanted to do a bigher push to wrap up the splitboarding season. Something off the beaten track and with adventure elements.
Warm temps placed us in higher altitude, at the end of Val d’Herens.
We set off from Ferpecle, boot packing first 600 vertical meters, putting skis on from Bricola hut, skinning up to Dent Blanche hut. We intended to spend the night at winter room as hut only opens in mid June. To our surprise, the new hutkeeper alongside volunteers were preparing the hut for summer season. Cosy beds, finest wine from Vevey and warm cheese fondue topped with spectacular sunset at the hut wrapped up our first day.
Next morning started with drone scouting the safest way down. We opted for a scenic glacier tour all the way to Bricola hut, summiting Tête Blanche along the way. Navigating crevassed and wast glaciers, we crossed Col de Bertol and started our descent towards Arolla. Heavy backpacks, few too many bootpack sections and a fewsharky descent paths lead us to foothill of Mont Collon. Snaking alongside glacier rivers concluded our last tour of the season. And what a grand adventure it was! #arolla #valdeherens #switzerland
Hike to Zinal Glacier 🏔️
5h adventure with the goal to see the ice caves 🧊
From packed snow to knee-deep (or even hip-deep at times 😅) snow, the path led us up to the very scenic snack-break spot 😏
The way back? Jumping over a river and hobby-skiing down the slope 🏃♀️
