Much like a southern dialect in relation to a northern one, BBQ is sacred and distinct in nature and varies region to region, sometimes even state to state. Here in Bama we’re known for molasses based bbq sauces that we drench on our protein of choice. Typically consists of pulled pork, pork ribs, chicken, and turkey, brisket is slowly introducing itself to our state, but I have yet to meet someone who’s mastered it, and that’s not for lack of effort, rather much like Kudzu being introduced to our state in the 1800s by way of the New Orleans exposition, it’s one of those slowly, suddenly, then all at once type of things and I have no doubt our expression of brisket will be remarkable. The white bama sauce goes without saying, Alabama barbecue is strong and distinct. But one can’t talk about barbecue without mentioning the speciality cuisine of our southern neighboring state of Texas. Arguably the king of barbecue, Texas style barbecue is in a league of its own imho, my pallet has changed to where sauces rob the element of smoke, fire, and spice that’s synonymous with good barbecue. I’ll even take it a step further and say that sauces can and do mask the mastery required to allow high quality ingredients of barbecue to speak for themselves. I can say with the utmost confidence that @austinwhereabouts has only elevated my perception of what good is, because they’re excellent. The kiddos and I got to attend their grand opening and we left with full bellies and complete joy knowing that our spirits were fed. A new restaurant raising the bar…b-que! Dad & I checked out the recently opened @austinwhereabouts . Austin Whereabouts has an established food trailer, but they just opened their brick & mortar restaurant last weekend. They specialize in central Texas style bbq & are located in Bessemer at 6530 Pocahontas Rd. 🍖🔥Upon arriving, we were greeted by owner, Johnny LaFoy. Johnny & I attended Hueytown High School, so I was delighted to highlight a hometown hero! Johnny made us a tasting tray, so we could try a bit of everything…& y’all, this tray blew me away! We had brisket, pulled pork, beef sausage, jalapeño cheddar sausage, spare ribs & smoked chicken. Brisket is what Austin Whereabouts is known for, so that’s what I dove into first. It was the best brisket I’ve ever had, by far, absolutely no contest! It featured a beautiful, intensely flavorful, savory bark & the most meaty, buttery brisket you can imagine. I also loved the pulled pork, juicy beef sausage & spare ribs. They were all so delicious, I realized halfway through that I hadn’t even added any bbq sauce yet! All the meats stand solid on their own, but the homemade bbq sauce & Alabama white sauce are also incredible. 🫘🌽🍌In addition to the meat feast, we tried several sides. My favorites of them being the creamy mac & cheese, tangy slaw & loaded potato salad. Since we were packed, Johnny sent us home with banana pudding, which I devoured that evening when I was hungry again.😋 💎🏆I was EXTREMELY impressed with Austin Whereabouts. The food was outrageous, the atmosphere is comfortable & service is friendly. Dad & I agreed this bbq spot stands out above the rest. This was truly one of the best dining experiences I’ve enjoyed this year, so far. Word is already getting out, so I can’t stress this part enough…ARRIVE EARLY!
