In 2017, a Shell gas station in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, gained a world-famous employee who doesn’t know how to pump gas but is an expert in customer service. Negão was an adult dog who had been heartlessly abandoned at the construction site by his former owners. Too terrified to leave his only home, he roamed the dirt lots until the station’s new owners, Sabrina Plannerer and her partner, decided to adopt him. They didn’t just give him a dog house and medical care; they gave him a permanent position on the team, complete with his very own official employee ID badge.
Negão quickly became the face of the business, proving to be a natural-born greeter. Instead of being overwhelmed by the constant bustle of cars and people, he waits for customers to pull up so he can welcome them with a wagging tail and his signature “smile.” The community has fallen in love with their local four-legged staffer, with many regulars stopping by specifically to bring him new toys or treats. Because the station is staffed 24/7, Negão is never alone, always having a coworker nearby for a mid-shift belly rub or a walk through town.
His success story sparked a viral movement in Brazil, led by the charity Grupo FERA, which encourages other businesses to “hire” strays who might not fit into a traditional home. Negão has become a living symbol of how a little compassion can turn a “needy” animal into a beloved colleague. Sabrina hopes that by sharing his journey, more business owners will realize that a canine staffer is the ultimate way to boost morale—and customer loyalty. In the quiet rhythm of nearly twenty years together, John Unger and his dog Schoep built a bond that went far beyond ordinary companionship. Schoep came into John’s life as a small puppy, and through some of John’s most challenging years, he remained a steady source of comfort and emotional support. John often said that Schoep had saved him, offering loyalty and stability when he needed it most.
As Schoep grew older, severe arthritis began to make even simple movements painful. Walking became difficult, and resting no longer brought relief. Determined to ease his friend’s suffering, John discovered that the natural buoyancy of the lake near their home reduced the pressure on Schoep’s aching joints. Each evening, he would gently carry him into the water, holding him close as they floated together in silence.
In the calm of the lake, supported by John’s arms and the water’s lift, Schoep would sometimes drift into a peaceful sleep. The weight that troubled him on land seemed to disappear, replaced by a quiet sense of comfort and safety.

In caring for Schoep during his final years, John ensured that the companion who had once saved him would be surrounded by dignity, tenderness, and unwavering devotion until the very end.
David Bahnson, a retired orthopedic surgeon from Vermont, found a unique way to share his love of kayaking with his dogs by designing and building a custom kayak specifically for them. After noticing that his first dog, Susie, could comfortably sit in the storage compartment of a kayak he built from a kit, he modified the boat by adding a special opening to keep her dry and secure during their trips.
When a second dog, Ginger, joined the family, Bahnson adapted the kayak again, creating an additional space so both dogs could ride comfortably. Each dog had its own dedicated spot, making the experience safer and less awkward than having them sit in the main cockpit. The dogs were trained to get in and out on command and remained calm and seated throughout their journeys.
Over the years, Bahnson and his wife paddled many miles with their dogs, creating lasting memories on the water. Although Susie and Ginger have since passed away, the tradition continues with the family’s newer pets. Bahnson’s custom kayak reflects his deep bond with his dogs and his belief that adventures are best enjoyed together.
