The gender pay gap is real – but it was a whole lot bigger in 1849, when virtusoso pianist Louise Farrenc taught at the Paris Conservatoire. 😟 Then Louise premiered an incredible new composition: the Nonet in E flat, the first since Beethoven to tackle such a complex chamber music combo – and the rest is history. 💪

We love historic winds! Co-artistic director @nicolevanbruggen travelled to Melbourne this week to workshop HIP with wind students at Monash University, in partnership with Musica Viva Australia. Under Nicole's expert guidance they explored historically informed performance (HIP), its origins and purpose, and how it influences modern performance today. 🎵
Said lecturer Dr Nicole Canham: "Nicole's presentation was so rich in ideas and information. It wonderfully brought to life the ways that historically informed performance practices can enrich performer connections with the music, and with their audiences. Thank you for your passion and enthusiasm – it is just so engaging and infectious!" 😃😃

🎵 Dropping another #BeethovenSeptet7 - seven reels + seven weeks of the iconic Septet. Here's Week 6: Premiere! 🥂
On 2 April 1800, Beethoven premiered this brilliant work at the Burgtheater in Vienna. It was an instant hit and immensely popular for decades afterwards. This enraged the composer, who thought it overshadowed his better compositions and allegedly referred to it as: "That damn work! I wish it were burned!" 🔥
Dear Beethoven: We're very glad you didn't burn it. 😝
Here's the opening of the fifth movement, which sashays along led by the horn.

Happy Eiffel Tower Day! 🗼On this day in 1889, the famous Paris landmark officially opened – the world's tallest tower.
BUT: four decades earlier, on 19 March 1850, came another French triumph – composer Louise Farrenc premiered her Nonet to huge acclaim, eventually using the piece's success to win her equal pay to male colleagues at the Paris Conservatoire. 💪
