This Sunday May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Democracies are strongest when everyone can participate freely and equally. LGBTQIA+ equality and inclusion is at the heart of democracy. Australia stands together in Pride with the LGBTQIA+ community and believes all people, no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or sex characteristics, deserve freedom, equality and justice. No one should be left behind.

On 4 and 5 May, we joined communities across the Netherlands to mark Dutch liberation from occupation during World War II and to honour all those who served and gave their lives for freedom. We paid tribute to Australian aircrew lost far from home, including the five Australians who perished when Halifax W1220 was shot down in 1942 and who are now buried in Jelsum, and Spitfire pilot Jack Dawson Green, killed in action in 1945 just weeks before the war’s end. Their service — and the care with which their memory is preserved here — remains a powerful and poignant reminder of Australia’s role in the liberation of the Netherlands. We also attended remembrance services in Oene and Schoonebeek, where personal stories of war victims underscored the human cost of occupation and conflict, and the importance of preserving and passing on these memories to future generations. On Liberation Day, we joined the National Commemoration of the 1945 Capitulations in Wageningen, the Freedom Parade, and the Liberation Concert in Amsterdam – moments that honoured Allied sacrifice while celebrating 81 years of democratic freedom. Together, these commemorations reaffirm our enduring commitment to remembrance, peace and the defence of freedom. Lest we forget. 📸T. Holwerda, Peter Groenveld

We were honoured to attend the Adoption of War Graves ceremony at the CWGC War Cemetery in Mierlo on 25 April, alongside the Mayor of Geldrop‑Mierlo, the Foundation Board and members of the local community. Deputy Head of Mission Kevin Playford paid tribute at the Australian war graves, acknowledging the fallen aircrew and those who care for their memory and ensure their stories, service and legacy are preserved with care and respect. The ceremony reflected the deep and enduring commitment of Dutch communities to remembering those who gave their lives far from home.

Australia may be known for its beautiful beaches and unique wildlife, but it is home to some incredible innovation too. From WiFi, to the cochlear implant, to the aircraft black box, Australian ideas have shaped technologies used every day around the world — including here in the Netherlands. A reminder that long‑term investment in research, and a commitment to international collaboration, can change lives globally. #AUSinNL

On Saturday, we commemorated ANZAC Day at the Commonwealth War Graves section of Westduin Cemetery, where seven Australian and one New Zealand servicemen are laid to rest, far from their homelands. ANZAC Day, observed each year on 25 April, marks the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli in 1915 and has since become a day to honour all Australians and New Zealanders who served, suffered and fell in war and peacekeeping operations. Born from a campaign that was not a military victory, the ANZAC story is not one of triumphalism, but of remembrance, compassion and quiet determination – and of ensuring that the sacrifices of those who died continue to protect the freedoms and rights we cherish today. Here in the Netherlands, we reflected on the shared values that bind us across great distances, and on the young men and women who gave their lives so young, and so far from home, in the service of freedom. In honouring those who lie at Westduin, we also honoured all ANZACs, and all who have fallen, wherever they rest. Thank you to those who joined us in remembrance.
