AUR has grown steadily over the past few years and is currently a 15 people practice in New Delhi. We are actively hiring for Interns in New Delhi. Our projects in construction include an 8 acre residential sports academy for marginalized children with 9 buildings out of volcanic basalt (site is in rural Maharashtra) for a California NGO, Manchester City's first International School in India, and Port Heritage Museum in Kolkata within the Indenture Memorial Complex. We are starting construction soon on several projects - restoration of a haveli in Shekhawati, a heritage hotel out of limestone in Shekhawati, restoration of a Dalan Bari into a boutique hotel in a 30 acre green campus in Santiniketan, a School of Business in Kolkata, and a high end restaurant in Manhattan. We are about to start design work on several exciting social, institutional, residential, cultural, and hospitality projects across 5 provinces in India and in New York State. AUR is committed to cultivating a supportive and nurturing work environment where curiosity, mentorship, and professional growth are central to daily practice. We believe in actively transmitting knowledge of our experience gained from working internationally and empowering our team to develop a global perspective with local ground knowledge at the highest level of design excellence.

Buddhist Cafe, Lumbini - nativity site of the Buddha, in modern day Nepal A cafe for Buddhist Pilgrims at the historic site of Buddha’s birth. Steered by the World Bank for local communities and creating livelihood opportunities, the café employs only women. It is an adaptive reuse of an old Kenzo Tange designed pavilion that continues the vaulted geometry into the woodwork, furniture, and spatial configuration. It augments the homogeneous brick with local wood.

Stonecrete mockups by masons with local basalt stones. For girls' and boys' hostel block of our Hi5 Sports Academy project in rural Maharashtra outside of Mumbai. Materiality anchors the project to its geological context. Local volcanic basalt abundant and historically embedded in regional construction practices becomes both material and narrative. Multiple material expressions of basalt define the buildings - random rubble masonry, gabion wall, and stonecrete.

On March 18, 2026, our AIANY | Emerging New York Architects Committee was pleased to host our monthly committee meeting on the topic of – “Architecture Practice – Global South to the Global North”, presented by Aurgho Jyoti, AIA, founder of AUR - Architecture Urbanism Research, and Alexander Loyer Hughes, AIA, co-founder of KURV Architecture DPC , at AIA New York | Center for Architecture. Aurgho Jyoti, AIA is founder of AUR - Architecture Urbanism Research. AUR, और in Hindi, signifies the “other” and signals a “prompt.” AUR as a practice is invested in providing a voice for the “other.” Architecture is seen as a responsibility and the studio uses history as a tool to address social relevance, cultural significance, and environmental resilience. They are interested in architecture that crafts histories of the future thoughtfully excavating histories of the past. The work is embedded in narratives of cultural continuity, social equity, and material specificity. AUR is an international architecture firm with a focus on social and cultural projects. It was founded in 2019 by Aurgho Jyoti and currently operates out of New York and New Delhi. Alex Loyer Hughes AIA is a co-founder of Kurv Architecture. Over his 25-year career he has made success in New York City, including high-rise, international hospitality, commercial retail, high-end residential, conversions, interior and industrial design. He led client and investor relationships, overseeing project execution, and was experienced in NYC ULURP, NYC Board of Standards and Appeals, NYC Department of Buildings, NYC Landmarks and Preservation Commission procedure. This was a career talk from immigrant architects’ perspective, sharing insights of the way that shaped their career from India and Chile to New York, how their international background became their superpower to grow and thrive, and ultimately start their own practice and make success, from global south to the global north. This event was curated and moderated by Hao-Yeh Lu, Co-Chair of AIANY Emerging New York Architects, with photography by Chia-Han Lin.

Hi5 Foundation Sports Academy, Chikhalgaon . Currently under construction in rural Maharashtra close to Mumbai.  Set within a dramatic volcanic basalt stone landscape, this residential sports academy imagines architecture as an instrument of social equity. Conceived as a campus of play, learning, and collective growth, the project is dedicated to empowering children from marginalized slum and tribal communities through the transformative agency of sport.  Materiality anchors the project to its geological context. Local volcanic basalt—abundant and historically embedded in regional construction practices—becomes both material and narrative. Multiple material expressions of basalt define the buildings - random rubble masonry, gabion wall, and stonecrete. Random rubble masonry walls establish a tectonic solidity; gabion assemblies imagine the stone as porous, breathable thresholds; and stonecrete creates granular textured surfaces of small basalt aggregates. Port Heritage Museum at Indenture Memorial Complex - Kolkata . A museum that archives the built history of the oldest colonial Port in India and the story of migration of indentured labourers across plantation colonies. The weathered steel facade is an indexed grid of a labourer’s sleeping module inside the ship. It addresses both the material memory of the site and the human memory of labour migration. It translates scale - making infrastructure and the intimacy of displacement visible together. AUR (Architecture) along with Dronah (Exhibition Design) has designed the Port Heritage Museum with the Kolkata Port Trust. The museum is currently under construction on top of a 19th century dry dock along the Hooghly waterfront in Kolkata. The exterior facade distills the spatial logic of the indentured labourers’ sleeping berths within the ship’s hull into an architectural register. During the voyage, bodies were packed into compressed compartments—standardized and fixed. The façade translates this condition of enforced proximity into an indexed grid, transforming the ergonomics of confinement into an architectural datum. Constructed in weathered steel, the exterior resonates with the patina of existing and adjacent industrial port structures, implanting the building within the material memory of the site. A rigorous orthogonal armature—horizontal and vertical members in weathered steel—organizes the facade, with inset steel back panels completing the assembly. On the subsidiary volumes, this tectonic vernacular is recalibrated at a finer grain, producing a denser texture while maintaining formal continuity across the ensemble. AUR’s proposal for a cultural mixed-use mid-rise for Kolkata Port Trust above a 170 year old hydro-power station. It references the industrial and infrastructural heritage of the city while reflecting on the city’s colonial and indigenous riparian history. The Portal is both minimal and simultaneously ornamental borrowing heavily from the industrial precedents through its mutated expression. The Howrah Bridge’s sweeping profile and metal structure, the Strand Road warehouses with its Victorian industrial vocabulary of brick façades with semi-circular arches, and the riverfront ghat pavilions with intricate wrought iron filigree within arched openings.
