Ballroom culture has its roots in the Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities of New York, where from the 1970s onward it developed as an autonomous world of performance, competition and mutual care. Its organising unit is the House — a chosen family built around
mentorship and belonging, competing at Balls in categories that span voguing, fashion and what the culture calls realness: the ability to inhabit an identity so completely it becomes undeniable.
The Kiki circuit brought that architecture to younger generations, leaning into celebration, growth and safety as much as competition. In Lisbon, that scene has been built from the ground up — not imported culture, but culture claimed, translated and made native.
HAPPY TREE FRIENDS KIKI BALL 2.0 is part of that lineage. Presented by Starfire 007, Ira 007 and Neo Coperni, it is an event built on the conviction that chosen family is not a metaphor. It is a structure of survival and joy.
