Our brains are incredible machines that can perceive and interpret tiny differences in sounds between the two ears. That’s how we are able to tell if sounds are coming from the left, right, and even above, bellow or behind our heads. Stereo recording techniques (which use 2 mics or more) are an attempt at recreating the way the human brain hears sounds. Which technique is better? Hint: there are several answers, ask me about it :)

This is a mic array used during research for my master’s. The mics used here were several @sennheiser MHK800s, one Sennheiser MKH Twin, and not seen in this photo one pair of Coles 4038s, and a pair of @dpa_microphones 4006s.
