Join us next week Monday for a Screening of Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire (Himmel über Berlin). In the film, we follow a set of invisible Angels who watch over Berlin, silently observing the streets and inhabitants of the city. When one of them falls in love with a human, he gives up his immortality and falls back down to earth, only this time his presence is tangible. This is the first event of this semesters theme “Cities and ___”, in which we will be highlighting cinema that examines different notions and aspects of ‘the city’ and the forms of habituation within it. As always, we will have popcorn for you! 🍿 When: Monday, 23rd of March, 19:00 Where: Event Space 2 See you there!

For our second act of Saturday night, we have KROES, a project by @appelmoesroes playing over two animated surrealist shorts, An Optical Poem (1938) and Kidnapping of the Sun and Moon (1968. Get the last available tickets on the @droogamsterdam website!! KROES is a project by Amsterdam-based maker Lau Breukhoven exploring the intersection between live performance and music technology. It draws inspiration from themes on the seemingly mundane to hidden histories, providing both exposure to the overlooked and insight on the trivialities of life. Driven by a curiosity and intrigue with nuance, KROES unites technical experimentation with poetic sensibility, inviting listeners to not only observe, but to inhabit the works themselves. Moving shapes and patterns, set to music, create a visual rhythm on screen. Oskar Fischinger's An Optical Poem turns simple forms and color into a playful, dancing animation. The sun and moon have been kidnapped, throwing the world as we know it into darkness. This film by Sándor Reisenbüchler follows the effort to restore balance and bring light back again.

Announcing the first act of our event with CUT at Droog this Saturday ‼️ Before Breakfast will be playing over 2 surrealist short films, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) and Vormittagsspuk (1928). Get your tickets on the @droogamsterdam website before they sell out!! « Before Breakfast » is a project consisting of three emerging artists from the European jazz scene: Timothé Lantoine, Karlīna Priedēna, and Álvaro Orcajo. Rooted in improvisation and shaped by influences such as classical music, pop, and jazz, the trio seeks to redefine silence, sound, and the visual dimension. Their work explores the space between what is heard, what is seen, and what is felt, inviting the audience into a sensitive and immersive experience. Maya Deren’s surrealist film Meshes of the Afternoon follows a woman who experiences a series of dreamlike, repetitive events within her home. As the space becomes increasingly labyrinthine, the film comments on the tensions of domestic life. Hans Richter’s Dadaist animation “Vormittagsspuk” portrays an emancipatory revolution of objects against their traditional routine. This playful short gives day-to-day items agency over their innate controllers: humans!

CUT and SSP are back for another collaborative screening! 📽️ In line with CUT’s current theme of Post-Documentary, we will be screening Elia Suleiman’s “Divine Intervention”. This Palestinian documentary pushes the bounds of fiction and reality by showing us an alternative form of resistance: Magic! Documentary is the main form of cinema we trust with the power to inform us about the world we live in. There is power in the creatives that purport narratives about countries and conflicts worldwide, which is why we want to give the stage to Palestinian filmmakers and let the narrative be put into the hands of the people. Come join us at 20:00 on Monday, the 8th of December, for a screening and open discussion at Noon Coffee and Culture! Located right at Science Park station, this cafe offers a cozy space to laugh, learn, and deliberate! Sign up using the link in our bio, see you there :) Lots of Love, CUT + SSP
