Our finale death was all hands on deck from the start. Our amazing production designer Ciara Vernon and our construction team built a fountain *from scratch.* Fun fact: where the fountain from Mean Girls used to be (wild).
For Pumpkinās death and Appleās monologue, camera operator Yoann Malnati stepped in. Lili performed her confessional holding onto the camera, staring directly into a 24mm Canon K35 lens.
Lola then had to recreate her entire death moment in ADR (shout out to Lola)! Our stellar sound and mixing team at Pictureshop balanced Pumpkinās gasps, the fountain noise, and the building tornado outside. And final touch was composer Anna Drubichās propulsive, haunting scoreā¦ that then had to take us to Scottsdale and back to the land of satire. Team Fruits! ā¤ļøš

The apple is poison.
The third act was really about watching Apple unravel emotionally and physically. Originally in the script, Lili and Lola were in slip dresses in the fountain scene, taking off their outfits after getting bloody. But then Sarah Millman, our costume designer, and our 1st AD David Antoniuk and I had an aha! moment. I wanted Apple to rip off her fabulous red dress and put on something sheād otherwise never dare wear: sweatpants, flip flops, and a baby T. And what better to go on it than the name of the play (Lily Houghton! āš») that the movieās based on ā a foreboding sentence of her crime to come ā¦

never riding an escalator again š
On an indie budget, DP Karim Hussain and I knew we couldnāt build an entire set, and we wanted effects done practically with minimal VFX. We shot on the real mallās escalator with 9 seconds of shooting time from top to bottom. Working with Derek Liscoumb & our SPFX dept, we built 3 steps of a fake escalator we moved up and down by hand for all of Victoriaās CUs. This sequence was all about inserts + relying on the audiencesā brain to piece together the chaos.
