[Slides 1-2]: Statue of Princess of Hatra located at Medina Wasl, a mock Iraqi village used to train U.S. soldiers in urban warfare at Fort Irwin National Training Center in California. The plaque reads: “The statue of the Princess of Hatra was originally erected in 238 AD to protect that city (now called al Hadr, Iraq) from the Persians. This statue was erected at Medina Wasl in appreciation of the American Soldier, the true protector of democracy, and the National Training Center which prepares Soldiers for the rigors of combat. –MOUT Enhancements by Strategic Operations, Inc. San Diego, CA” [Slide 3]: The original statue of the Princess of Hatra, carved from limestone and standing 222 cm tall. Currently housed in the Iraq Museum, Baghdad. [Slides 4-5]: Soldiers from Crazy Troop, 3-7 Cavalry, 2HBCT, 3ID, take a detour to Al Hatra, an ancient city located southwest of Mosul in the Al-Jazarah region before heading back on a three hour convoy to Contingency Operating Site Marez. During the Iraq War, U.S. troops were issued a pocket-sized “Culture Smart Card,” a fold-out guide created by the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity to help soldiers understand the country they were about to occupy.  In these pages, soldiers were taught Iraqi customs, gestures, and phrases. By 2006, over 1.8 million copies had been distributed.
