The Hanford site was home to the US's first uranium processing plants. Refining uranium into plutonium to be used in weapons used for testing, and the weapons used against Japan.
The running of this site by General Electric at the time caused catastrophic environmental impacts that are still being felt in a very real way today. It is estimated that at least 1 million gallons of highly radioactive waste has already been leaked into the soil and ground water, which flows directly into the Columbia River...
For clarity, this was a site made for refining uranium for the use in weapons at the time. Not for the use of nuclear power.

Our Director, Daniel Everitt-Lock sat down in conversation with Alan Coon at @talent.freaks to discuss all about the film. Hear about Daniel's inspiration here!

Woomera was a military town and aerospace testing range about 400km's outside of Adelaide. There is a horrific graveyard at this site containing the bodies of over 80 babies that died 'mysteriously', most within a few days of birth.
It was documented that a black mist travelled across from the Maralinga desert during the major tests. This fallout had catastrophic impacts on people in the are and further afield.

Did you uncover anything that made you question how history has been told to us? (Good question! A bunch unfortunately...)

There are numerous sites within the Maralinga desert where we found nuclear waste had been dumped. Some marked, and some unmarked. But even those that had been marked, fenced and apparently protected, had very little to no protection at all...

The British carried out seven major atomic weapons tests and nearly 700 minor trials in the Maralinga Desert. Indigenous communities were forcibly removed from their land so the area could be used for nuclear testing, leaving their homes permanently contaminated by radiation.
The treatment of these communities reflected a profound disregard for their lives and culture. Sacred lands were repurposed as waste storage sites, while uranium and other radioactive materials were buried across the Maralinga desert, often in unmarked locations, with little effort made to ensure long-term safety or accountability.

The story that started it all! 4 years of production started with one small story for director our director, Daniel Everitt-Lock. Hearing of how hundreds of thousands of soldiers experienced the same thing, a flash so bright that they could see the x-ray of their hands through their closed eyes, was what motivated the beginning of this film.
Brian Unthank, just happened to be the first veteran interviewed for the documentary, with the most powerful retelling of the moment!
