At the @women_in_games_wigj Career Expo last month, @charliefoxart hosted a chilled session, creating an original artwork and answering questions about life and the industry. Here were some of the takeaways: ✨ No matter your background, getting into concept art is a lot of work. A career in art is hard, but it's fun, too! ✨ As an artist, you have to get used to failing. Your eye will develop faster than your skills. ✨ A lot of new graduates who want to get into concept art don't always understand what it is. There's no evidence of iteration, brainstorming, thumbnailing, etc. in their portfolios. They think the final product (the marketing art) will sell them as an artist, rather than the 80% of the development work that went into it. ✨ Love what you do, but don’t take it personally when you get professional feedback on changes. It’s ultimately not a reflection on you as an artist or a person. We’re all going to have off days. ✨ Every opportunity you get to study from life: do it! "It is always inspiring to chat to other artists and aspiring game devs, and I loved sharing some of my own journey breaking into the industry," said Charlie Fox, Character Discipline Lead at Atomhawk, "We covered a whole range of stuff from portfolio pitfalls to artist inspirations to secret reference websites—and the (often unexpected) ways that your life experiences can enrich your work!" The Women in Games Careers Expo was inspiring, honest and practical. It was designed to help attendees understand where the industry is heading and how they can shape their place within it. We were honoured to be a part of it! All Company News > [Atomhawk on LinkedIn] Client Projects and Services > [link in bio] Free Creative Resources > [link in bio > Resources]

Despite years of discussion, initiatives, and public commitments to change, the proportion of women working in the global games industry has remained largely static. According to the 'GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry' report, women made up just 24% of respondents, compared to 64% men, with a further 8% identifying as non‑binary. Throughout March, Atomhawk is celebrating the women in our workplace and reflecting on how we can continue building a studio where everyone feels supported and able to flourish. Our women Hawks enrich our projects and our culture every day, bringing unique life experiences, perspectives, and approaches to problem solving that elevate the quality of our work and strengthen who we are as a team. "Representation matters. I’m proud to have navigated the challenges of becoming a woman in leadership, if only to help smooth out some of the rough patches for the incredibly talented and inspiring women at Atomhawk as they progress in their careers with us," said Becky Jackson, Operations & Commercial Director at Atomhawk. It remains vital that we continue the conversation about the marginalisation of women in the games industry. Atomhawk is committed to understanding, engaging with, and championing underrepresented genders. We will keep working to ensure our studio is a place where everyone is seen, accepted, supported and celebrated for who they are.
