The name Shangri La was made up by a British guy named James Hilton in the 1930s in his book, Lost Horizon. Until 2001 the city in China was known as Zhongdian (中甸), but the name was changed to promote visitors to the area. It's in Yunnan province but it's also the capital of the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which borders on the Tibetan Autonomous Region. Tibetans call the area Gyalthang (རྒྱལ་ཐང), which means 'royal plains'.
