When I followed George Forster‘s footsteps through the South Pacific, we did a bit of filming and made a trailer for my new book „The Traveller“. Forster was a man who fought racism and who believed in humanity. I can’t wait to share his story (please note that the video says the book is available now … but not quite yet). 2 June in the UK, 9 June in the US @penguinukbooks@allenlanepr@aaknopf #GeorgeForster #books
The US edition of „The Traveler“ arrived today. It looks stunning! Thank you to @aaknopf . US pub date is 9 June. I’ll be doing talks in NY, DC, Buffalo and Charleston. Details are on my website. Come. Listen. Read. And be enthralled by the remarkable George Forster.
I love receiving foreign editions … this one is the tiny 2-volume paperback Japanese edition of INVENTION OF NATURE which just arrived. I have 3 copies to give away (only to UK addresses). DM me or email me (my email is on my website.
When I finish a book, I desperately need to work with my hands. Make something. Paint something. Repair something. Start and finish something in one day. Anything that focusses my energy on wood, walls, soil. This week I rescued two tables that seemed beyond repair. Sanded them for hours by hand and painted them. They look almost like new. I painted a garden shed (inside and outside), weeded, planted, sowed, and watched „my“ swallows building their nests. Now, I’m ready to go back to my desk.
I reviewed @craig.fehrman brilliant new book about Lewis & Clark expedition (which of course had quite a lot of other members) for @nytbooks . It’s fabulous.
My mother made this pin cushion in primary school in 1946, exactly 80 years ago. She still uses it all the time when she makes the most beautiful clothes for her great grandchildren. She even travels with it. The bottom is embroidered with „B“ for her name and the year she made it.
Here are my 'The Traveler' tour dates for the US this June (I'm having to get used to spelling the title of my book differently ... 'The Traveller' in the UK and 'The Traveler' in the US). Please come - links to the events are on my website.
Some rather brilliant people have given my new book 'The Traveller' (a biography about explorer, naturalist and revolutionary George Forster) some rather wonderful blurbs. Thank you. Thank you. The book comes out in early June. @jsancton@holland_tom_six@mariapopova@hamptonsidesauthor and Sue Prideaux, Neil MacGregor and Richard Holmes
Better get my hands on a few of these. New stamps in Germany celebrating 50-years of Georg-Forster Antarctic station. Of course after the protagonist of my forthcoming book “The Traveller”
Here are the dates for my UK publicity tour for “The Traveller. The Revolutionary Life of George Forster and his Search for Humanity”. Can’t wait to tell you all about this man who tried to find what connects us rather than what sets us apart. And he was Humboldt’s mentor. Please come! Looking forward to seeing you there. #GeorgeForstwr #booktours #theTraveller
Yeah! A Starred Review of 'The Traveler' in Publishers Weekly. ‘Bestselling historian Wulf offers a revelatory biography of the little remembered but brilliant polymath and naturalist George Forster … Readers will be rapt by this immersive recreation of an intellectual awakening’.
I will never get tired of the moment when I receive the first copy of my book. 5 years … it all starts in my head but now it’s really really real. An object with pages, words and illustrations. I can’t wait for my readers to read it and to meet the extraordinary George Forster (who BTW was Humboldt’s mentor). THE TRAVELLER will be published in the UK, US and Netherlands in June, in Italy in August and at the end of September in Germany. Other countries to follow. #TheTraveller
