“I met Surya in Yogyakarta. I felt like there was a creative kindred spirit, somebody who was adventurous and extremely talented. And then when I found out what Sweda was, I spent a little time in their workshop and I was like, ‘We have to have them here at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival,’” jelasnya.

@SWEDA.CO is ready for takeoff… ✈️
SWEDA is an Indonesian jewelry brand that preserves traditional silver craftsmanship, creating distinctive handcrafted jewelry. Inspired by the techniques and artistry of their elders, SWEDA artisans create work that draws energy from youth subcultures, music, and the arts.
The word “sweda,” from Old Javanese, means “fingers”—a tribute to the artisans who shape each piece by hand.
Meet some of those artisans at the 2025 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, July 2–7 on the National Mall. You’ll learn about traditional silver craftsmanship as they demonstrate intricate pendant-making techniques every day during the Festival at our ‘Streetwise’ venue.
