This win recognises the solidarity, protected industrial action and sheer persistence that delivered Australia’s first local government multi‑employer agreement - even in the face of hostile employer resistance and multiple legal hurdles.
Holding the line and sticking together works ✊🔥
Every member in the social and community services tells us one story- the job is getting more complex and more dangerous but this is not being recognised by the government or Fair Work. How long until that happens?
Today the ASU stood proudly with the CPSU, other unions and supporters against threats by Jess Wilson to cut 7000 public service jobs, should the liberals take off in November.
We know there’s no fat to cut from the public sector. And we’ll keep fighting for a healthy public sector to support our communities across Victoria.💪
A big thank you to everyone who attended Tuesday’s rally in solidarity with council workers' 24-hour Strike! ASU members really appreciate the support of members from other workplaces (local government, community sector, and more), other unions who sent along a delegation, VTHC, MPs who stood by outside on the steps of Parliament, and everybody else who came along to support their fight for a fair deal.
Workers in social and community services are doing more complex, demanding work than ever before and their wages haven’t kept up. We brought together union staff and delegates over the course of 2 days in Sydney to make the case for a real wage increase. From panel discussions to open conversations, this summit was about building the claim that reflects how much this work has evolved. 💪
This is what 1,000 workers look like when they’ve had enough. 🔥✊
Local government workers build and run our communities every single day and today, they went on strike to demand what they deserve.
History was made on these streets today. And we’re just getting started.
