I had an unexpected encounter with what is certainly the Pine Processionary Caterpillar.
They move in these eerie nose-to-tail chains that can stretch several feet, like a single organism thinking with a hundred tiny bodies.
Run over the line and the illusion breaks. The procession scatters. The system loses its leader and the whole thing dissolves into confusion.
It's not the bite. It is the hairs.
Each caterpillar is covered in microscopic barbed hairs that break off and float in the air. They lodge in skin, eyes, lungs. People get rashes that feel like fiberglass under the skin. Dogs that sniff them can end up with severe tongue damage.
So the rule here in Spain is simple.
Watch them from a distance.
Do not touch them.
