The Current State Of Skratch by Bantog : Over the past 20yrs I’ve watched this skratch/tablist “scene”go from cutting edge/cool to a somewhat hidden/secretive society of pretentious dorks emphasizing a battle format which has done nothing but limit the creativity and appeal of this amazing tool/instrument. This is an art form I’ve dedicated countless hours on over many years. An art form I love deeply and am passionate about. I believe this scene can be so much more then what it’s been. My favorite skratch dj’s are the ones who know how to use restraint. When NOT to skratch. Pull backs and pauses when you don’t expect them. Making you wait til the end of the song to hear their cuts. Riding a beat, flowing to a melody. Letting the cuts SHINE verses oversaturating the listener with them. It’s not always about a 4 click orbit chirp twiddle crab tazer flare. It’s about musicality. Musicality in a way that even if a person who doesn’t know about or understand skratching can hear it and enjoy it. Also experimenting with new styles, patterns and cadences. For example I’m currently trying to develope a style that only involves my index finger on the fader and has an emphasis on the pull back instead of the common forward release. No crabs or twiddles as I’m flat out tired of that sound. Not going to give it a name cause I hate that dork shit but anyway. Rap music has expanded beyond the battle and technical format years ago and I believe skratching needs to do the same. Let’s pull it back, use restraint. Leave them wanting more. Shoutout to the handful of amazing skratch dj’s that continue to elevate the scene and understand the funk, the aesthetic, the vibes, the swagger. You are the reason I’m coming out of retirement. ❤️. #MakeSkratchingCoolAgain
