Let’s all pretend this was uploaded two weeks ago when I made it! Thank you 🤗 🎭 As always, there’s lots of exciting theatre shows happening across Scotland this month from regional theatre to major uk tours. 🌟 Here are just a few that I’m looking forward to catching in May. Let me know if you have seen / are seeing any of these, and if I’ve missed anything! I have a major backlog that I’m working through at the moment having been offline for ages so I’m sure I’ve missed loads. 💖 May the theatre Gods be ever in your favour x #theatre #scottishtheatre #whatsonedinburgh #whatsonglasgow #musicaltheatre

Imagine you are in the congregation for a theatrical funeral officiated by Lady Gaga and you won’t be far off the mark for how it feels to be in the audience for Hannah Howie’s new autobiographical musical Funeral for My B**bs. As the show opens, Howie glides down the aisle, clad in black lace, flanked by her support: ‘Left B**b’, Gregor John-Owen and ‘Right B**b’, Kirsty Malone. Onstage Musical Director Stuart Fleming is at the keys. He had been playing sombre, traditional funeral background music as the audience took their seats at Òran Mór, but that soon gives way to dramatic arrangements of well-known pop hits as Hannah and her cortege tell their tale. Funeral for My B**bs takes the format of a stagey, comedy cabaret as Hannah recalls how she was diagnosed with a faulty gene mutation that makes her prone to developing breast cancer, and her life-changing decision to undergo a double mastectomy at a young age. Vibrant pop cabaret may seem an unconventional medium for telling such a serious true story, but it’s inspired. The writing (by Howie herself) and direction (by Chris Stuart Wilson) are both brave & respectful. Everyone has their own method for dealing with trauma, and Hannah Howie has chosen to say a fond farewell to her breasts in a way that only a performer of her calibre can: by belting out showtunes in a fabulous funeral-themed musical bursting with b**b puns. It’s poignant, camp and just the right side of bonkers. It works! Don’t be put off by the title of this musical or its subject matter: This is a funeral, yes, but it’s a funeral unlike any other. What Titanique the musical is to the Kate Winslet & Leonardo DiCaprio film Titanic, Funeral for My B**bs is to breasts and the Big C. It never makes fun of the tragedy nor belittles the horror, but it finds joy and humour in the face of inescapable pain. Hannah Howie has held a fabulous funeral for her b**bs and in doing so she has invited the world to celebrate life. Gorgeous ★★★★☆ Invite | Head to my website to read the full review. 📍You can pay your respects @playpiepint in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Ayr this May: Òran Mór Gla 4 - 9 @thegaiety Ayr 14 - 16 @assemblyroxy Edin 18 - 23

ALBUM LAUNCH PARTY FRIDAY 3RD JULY EDINBURGH with special guest NIAMH CORKEY Join @papersparrows and (very) special guest @niamh_corkey in Edinburgh at the @assemblyroxy in July to help us celebrate the launch of our new record "This Place You Call Your Home" - released by @folksville Records at the end of June. Tickets on sale now from assemblyroxy.com - link in bio. More on that album... A week before the above show, we're releasing the album "This Place You Call Your Home" (Folksville Records) - 26/06/36. "For fans of their 2023 debut album “Hiding Away From the Light”, the new album retains the ‘rich songwriting craft’ and distinctive twin-acoustic guitar style that won them plaudits on the folk festival circuit. But it also delivers something further: an evolution in arrangement and performance, leading to an energetic collection of songs imbued with dynamic contrast and heart. The album firmly captures on record the three part vocal harmony sound that has become so popular in their live sets, adding a delicate power to the quieter moments on the album and an uplifting joy to the singalong choruses." LP/CD/streaming. Pre-orders available soon.
