Discover Dawn Surratt @dawn_surratt featured in the second issue of Assembla Magazine. In her artist statement she notes "Real But Not True is a project that speaks to all the bits and ramblings we carry around in our brains: the circular thinking, the obscure and mysterious language of dreams, and the relentless mind chatter that we struggle to escape from when we are trying so desperately to sleep. It explores this experience through the lens of fragmentation and anxiety. Collage is used as the foundational technique, where disparate elements such as found photographs and my own captured images are layered with leather, mica, paper, and wood. These fragments of materials and techniques serve as windows into different times and narratives, creating a dialogue between memory and identity, between sleeping and waking, between what feels real and what is, or is not, true." Discover Pamela Landau Connolly @pamconnollyphoto featured in Assembla Magazine's second issue. Pamela Landau Connolly writes in her artist statement, "'Columbus Drive' uses vintage potholder looms, family photographs, archival canvas, and cotton thread to retell my childhood in suburban New Jersey during the 1960s and 70s. My process begins by scanning 3" square snapshots and reprinting them digitally on canvas. I cut the enlarged photos into 1/4" strips, warp the loom with color threads, and weave them back together. The finished piece includes both loom and woven image forming a 3-D object. While working on an earlier project exploring tin dollhouses, I began thinking of other toys used to prepare girls for their future as housewives. I remembered the potholder loom I played with and loved. At this time, I was scanning family photos. The square pictures and the square loom seemed to connect one to the other, and the idea emerged to combine them. This work was chosen for Photolucida's 2024 Critical Mass Top 50!." Frank Jennings writes in his artist statement, "I have a lifetime interest in old museums that house the quirky and the curious, where a lack of display space encouraged marriages and relationships to form between disparate objects and artifacts. This peculiar interest, combined with an insatiable appetite to satisfy a diverse collecting habit, are the main passions that influence the 'Deceptive Receptacles' I create. Over the years, I have amassed a plethora of objects and artifacts that have the potential for inclusion in my work: I like to display such items in close proximity to each other, hopeful that this might enable them to foster a relationship. Occasionally, I have used personalities such as Brunel, Columbus, Houdini, and Don Quixote as a starting point. The seashell is an ongoing feature within my work, initially as a single element and then progressing to multiple usages in a series of 'Hermit Crab Museums."
