🌴Je rêve, je reviendrai là-bas 🌴 For her first artwork with us at that’s what x said, @assala_chouk paid tribute to Henri Tibi, the print is now available online and at the gallery ✨ Henri Tibi, born in 1930 into a Tunisian Jewish family, led a remarkable life filled with various passions and a deep love for his hometown. Initially known as the first hippie in Tunisia, he later gained renown as a prolific photographer, capturing the essence of Tunisia through his extensive collection of images spanning the 1940s to the 1970s. Music held a special place in Tibi's heart, and he expressed his love for La Goulette through both classical compositions and his own original pieces. His music beautifully depicted the allure of his hometown, showcasing its gentle climate, rich history, and cultural heritage. However, Tibi's connection to Tunisia was bittersweet. As the turmoil of the 1967s forced the Jewish community to flee, he initially resisted leaving his beloved hometown. He sang songs about his friends who had left with the hope of returning to Tunis. Eventually, though, he made the difficult decision to depart. Seeking solace, he found comfort in the companionship of dogs and cats in France, living a nomadic existence. Throughout his life, Tibi penned numerous songs dedicated to his hometown, singing them daily in the streets. Through his music, he sought to capture the joy and preserve the image of Tunisia, longing for the day he could return. Sadly, his dream of homecoming remained unfulfilled as he passed away before witnessing the realization of his heartfelt desire. The story of Henri Tibi's artistic legacy, his biography, and his yearning to return home resonate not only with Tunisians but also with migrants worldwide who share a similar longing for their roots. Tibi's life serves as a poignant reminder of the power of art and the profound impact of displacement on individuals and communities. His photographs and music continue to evoke the spirit of Tunisia and inspire others to embrace and celebrate their own cultural heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for the importance of one's roots.
