This time last year, I travelled with 11 of my family members to the former site of Tule Lake incarceration camp — located along the California-Oregon interior border, on Modoc ancestral lands. We rode on a caravan of buses, along with upwards of 400 Nikkei, those formerly incarcerated at Tule Lake during WWII and their families. These personal recordings are an excerpt of what I witnessed and gathered that weekend — descriptions in comments. ‌ Shortly after the pilgrimage, I learned about the removal of the four lower Klamath hydro-electric dams, freeing over 420 miles of river and its tributaries that feed Tule Lake; for the first time in over a century, after decades of organizing by Klamath River Tribes, salmon returned to the Klamath River watershed. ‌ Early July also marks the beginning of a new fiscal year. This one confirms the continued funding of a US-backed genocide against Indigenous peoples, the re-proliferation of immigrant detention centers, and a 265% budget increase for a militarized ICE. As Philadelphia sanitation and municipal workers of DC 33 picket for better wages and healthcare, as farmworkers prepare for a nation-wide strike, as the heat holds steady, no longer a wave — there’s something to be said here about redirecting water. Colonialism, diaspora, and exploitations of land and labor have always been linked. I think about Toni Morrison, when she wrote, “You know, they straightened out the Mississippi River in places, to make room for houses and livable acreage. Occasionally the river floods these places. ‘Floods’ is the word they use, but in fact it is not flooding; it is remembering.”

It’s been five years since I first found FORTUNE, since FORTUNE found me. This is a hurting, hurtful world, and yet with FORTUNE, I’ve found a home — this Lunar New Year, I wish for all people to, at last, be at home and free, free, free. I hope you’ll join me tn with @manyfortunes at @iceboxprojectspace , 5 PM-midnight, for Year of the Wood Dragon — to celebrate the parts of this life that are worth living, and that are better lived together. Thank you for welcoming me into your home for another year. There’s no place I’d rather be.

On Front→ small, red rectangular outline sits centered on chest. A perforation line for cropping stretches horizontally across midsection of shirt and intersects an offset rectangular block of grayscale water droplets — as formed by sweat or condensation. Red text reading “FORTUNE PRESENTS—” runs up right sleeve in squiggly bubble letter font, while black, grayscale graphics (a scan of fortune cookie wrappers, an empty zodiac wheel, a cabbage vase, a qr code) stack in a vertical line down the left sleeve. On Back→ A portrait-oriented block of red text lists FORTUNE’s 13 monthly calls during the Year of the Pig. Larger text, reading “/50” in shadow font, sits nestled into text at bottom right corner. A wavy red line reminiscent of a placemat, surrounds frame]

<3MY MOONS<3 this year has been FULL for me working with @connieyu121 , Heidi, and all our @manyfortunes community, and now it’s time to start NEW. ⠀ FORTUNE copresents: A LUNAR NEW YEAR PARTY January 22, 2020, 6-11 pm @ The Rotunda Let's celebrate!: ⠀ A NEW YEAR For many cultures that attend to the lunar calendar, January 2020 marks not only the end of the Year of the Pig, but also the beginning of a new 12-year zodiac cycle. FORTUNE (in the Year of the Pig) will celebrate the end of its year-long run with forms as urgently iterative as they are new for us: a double-issue released by way of a festival, featuring performances by queer Asian artists. ⠀ _____ WHAT'S ON STAGE ⠀ >PERFORMERS: Leo Moon—> @try.agyn Ana Roxanne—> @frincess Diaspoura—> @diaspoura Annielille “Ani” Gavino—> @ani_malayaworks Wo Chan—> @theillustriouspearl Madam Data—> @madamdata Raverbaba—> @raver.jinn ⠀ >VENDORS: Clay Kitchen Studio—> @claykitchenstudio Pear Ware—> @p34r.w34r Serena Hocharoen—> @ser_ebob Sophie Sarkar—> @sophiesarkar Sun Song—> @ssuunsong ⠀ >PROJECTIONS Megumi Kanada—> @kanadamegumi >PHOTOGRAPHY (photo booth) Eva Wo—> @evawo.psd (event) Manny Figueroa—> @figueroa.photos ⠀ —— This is a POC-centered event. FORTUNE aligns itself against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism; and want to hold ourselves accountable to our community and other intersectional communities of color — we ask that you respect the same at this event. ⠀ At the door: $5-10 sliding scale, free for POC. All funds collected will go toward supporting event costs. Inside: There is a ramp into the building, which is wheelchair accessible. Some seating will be available. There is one bathroom at ground floor level at the far left of the stage and two bathrooms downstairs in the basement. All are gender neutral. ⠀ This event is generously funded by the Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant.
