Writing for The Tonearm, I looked at the legacy and influence of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, specifically in relation to the recent Power to Consume compilations.
Big thanks to Shaun Cohen for chatting with me about his process pulling them together.

E R O S
E R O S is the intercontinental trio of Karl O'Connor (Regis), Liam Andrews (MY DISCO) and Boris Wilsdorf (andereBaustelle Tonstudio/Einsturzende Neubauten). Rather than adding up the merits these three have accumulated in projects over the last 3 decades and handing the listener a receipt for their investment, EROS sees each member surrender his assets and build something entirely new. Wilsdorf's signature sheen was honed over decades, from a start working at Hansa Tonstudios under Jon Caffery, to his tenure as man of choice. This is evident in his final mix, but this trio speaks in its own voice, one that is greater than the sum of its parts. O'Connor's mastery of rhythmic languages is present, but not in a way that kicks us in the shins. Subtlety and dynamics work their magic so that when Andrews's bass booms out, it speaks with vitality and authority. Ultimately, EROS is threatening to concede to a pop sensibility, albeit one that exists in a uniquely twisted wasteland that is worthy of the Berlin lineage in which it was birthed.

“John Cale said, ‘Lou had these songs where there was an element of character assassination going on.’ There may well be more of the real Lou Reed in MMM than any of his other work, the assassination of Lou Reed by Lou Reed. Surely that’s exactly what any artist with half a brain should be doing or at least contemplating within their own work. We wanted to pay tribute to the purpose and the intent.”

Chances are that if you’ve engaged with noise in any capacity in the past 4 decades, you’ve come across Ron Lessard. Whether via his label or shop in Lowell, Mass (both RRRecords) or his work & performances under the name Emil Beaulieau, Ron is an undisputed icon of extreme electronics and the true definition of a ‘character.’ From his live sets utilizing the infamous 4-armed Minutoli turntable while blending in comedy, the legendary RRR 500 release, or the RRRecycled Series, Ron has done it all. Not just a fixture of the American Noise scene as we know it, he’s at least partially responsible for bringing Japanoise legends such as Merzbow, Masonna, and Violent Onsen Geisha to the now-bleeding ears of American listeners. The pure explosion that is Emil’s track kicks off Power to Consume, Vol. 2.

Dive into the second chapter of uncompromising sonic exploration with Metal Machine Music: Power to Consume, Vol. 2, a Record Store Day 2026 exclusive release. Although this may be the final edition (or is it?) of the Metal Machine Music: Power to Consume series, these artists and their accompanying auditory hallucinations are a proclamation that noise, industrial and experimental sounds, as well as the spirit of Lou Reed, continue to build upon themselves and are infinite. This time around, the purveyors of maximalist sounds are even more diverse featuring: Merzbow, Masonna, Pod Blotz, Lydia Lunch, Blixa Bargeld, EROS, Martin Rev, Moonbeam Terror, and Emil Beaulieau.
