🏡🐄 THEMATIC DEEP DIVE - PART 2: Great Western Trail: Argentina 🇦🇷🌾 Publisher: Lookout Games Designer: Alexander Pfister Artist: Chris Quilliams Picking up from our previous post, Great Western Trail: Argentina does an incredible job of weaving its theme into the game. The core of the game centres around track movement, requiring you to loop your estancieros around a circular path, evoking the long cattle drives that gauchos would have taken across the Pampas plains to deliver cattle to the ports. Deck management is used to manage your herd, with cattle cards representing your livestock, while their strength values help complete objectives and assist granjeros along the way. The game undoubtedly captures its theme, but as hinted at in our previous post, one aspect of history that appears largely absent is that, alongside Argentina's economic and industrial expansion, Indigenous communities across the Pampas were violently displaced. This is not a critique of the game; it remains a masterclass in well-rounded game design. However, it is still an important part of the region’s history to acknowledge. From what I understand of the history, Indigenous communities across the Argentine Pampas and Patagonia were displaced, killed, and enslaved during this period as part of a so-called “civilising” mission carried out through military campaigns. The intention was to open these regions to agricultural development and European settlement, while consolidating state control over the territory. There are subtle hints of this complexity in the artwork, honouring the region's original ethnic diversity and reflecting the varied cultural backgrounds historically associated with cattle-driving life in the Pampas. None of this detracts from the game. In fact, the designers appear to have approached the theme carefully, keeping the game engaging and historically grounded while avoiding depictions that could cause distress or trivialise the experiences of those whose families lived through these events or who continue to feel the weight of that history today. #boardgamegeek #argentina

🏡🐄 Great Western Trail: Argentina 🇦🇷🌾 Designer: Alexander Pfister Artist: Chris Quilliams Publishers: @lookout_games The Pampas plains are incredibly rich lands with many stories to tell. While researching this review, I came across a story of a young gaucho who set out with a group of seasoned men and returned with only two left standing. An incoming snowstorm and difficult decisions meant the cattle were prioritised, but sadly, some of their men were lost along the way. GWT: Argentina takes the classic GWT system and brings it to 19th-century Argentina, a time when ranching and agriculture expanded across the country. Players take on the role of estancieros, guiding their herds toward Buenos Aires, employing workers, assisting farmers, expanding railways, and building their ranching networks. Several interconnected systems bring the theme to life. Deck management and card collection represent building and improving your cattle herd, while route movement across the Pampas and advancing along the rail track improve deliveries. Buildings, objectives, and player powers create a deeply strategic yet satisfying experience. The production and artwork are spectacular. Double-layered boards, thoughtful storage, and beautiful artwork make the retail version feel genuinely deluxe straight out of the box. The biggest downside is the footprint. It is a true table hog, and at our medium-sized round table, we cannot comfortably play with more than two players. New players may also find the learning curve steep, with playtimes often reaching 2-4 hours. Yet that time feels small compared to the journeys many gauchos have taken across the plains. Like the men mentioned earlier, the game offers a glimpse into a world with a very real and meaningful history. Thankfully, players are not faced with the harsh realities many gauchos once endured, but the decisions remain meaningful, creating a rich strategic experience along the trail. ⭐ Rating 9/10 – Highly Recommended Have you played it? I’d love to hear how it performs at different player counts 💕 #boardgamephotography #tabletopphotography #analoggames

🏡🐄 PREVIEW: Great Western Trail: Argentina 🇦🇷🌾 Publisher: @lookout_games Designer: Alexander Pfister Artist: Chris Quilliams Intro When I first wrote a long-form review for Great Western Trail, I was pulled up on the word “wholesome”. I was told it was too subjective, which made me think more deeply about what I was trying to say. As a kid, my family used to sit around the table playing Squatters, a sheep-farming game a bit like Australian Monopoly. I remember the feeling of not worrying about the future, simply having fun and enjoying something that felt simple and pure. That was the feeling I got while playing Great Western Trail: Argentina. Overview In Great Western Trail: Argentina, you take on the role of a wealthy estanciero (ranch owner) moving cattle across the Pampas plains to deliver them to Buenos Aires, where they will be sold and shipped around the world. Along the way, you employ gauchos (herders), carpinteros (carpenters), granjeros (farmers), and maquinistas (engineers) to breed your herd, construct buildings that expand your ranch, and upgrade your train for more efficient deliveries. Mechanics The game combines several interconnected systems. Players build and improve their cattle deck through deck management, move along the trail through route movement, and advance their train along a rail track to improve deliveries. Building construction and variable setup options add further strategy and replayability. Positives The game is rich in strategy, with multiple systems working together to allow different paths to victory. The Argentine cattle-driving theme is strongly realised, and the production quality feels premium straight out of the box. Negatives This is a large game that takes up a lot of table space. At our table, we can only comfortably play with two players. It also has a long playtime and a fairly steep learning curve for players not used to heavier games. Rating Coming soon! Our full review and photo shoot are on the way, but it is already clear that we love this game. Stay tuned as we take a deeper thematic dive into Great Western Trail: Argentina. #boardgamegeek #boardgamesofinstagram #greatwesterntrail

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers – Trick-Taking Game ! Another mouthful of a game title... boy would I love to dig into this game but unfortunately the prequel (Fellowship) is kicking my ass. We've failed so many missions that by now Middle Earth should be comfortably administered by Sauron's distant descendants. I did of course want to take a peek at what's to come in the sequel and while the core gameplay remains the same, exciting new mechanics like the tower cards are added. Maybe one day I will get to explore this game - Frodo's journey took years so I guess I'm not behind yet! Are there any games you want to try but thematically can't? #boardgames #bgg #tabletop #thelordoftheringsthetwotowersthetricktakinggame #ad

Sul Sul! Tonight we are playing the SIMS Board Game, and it does a great job of turning the video game into a fast, family-friendly tabletop experience perfect for Christmas. Players jump into the neighbourhood, meet iconic Sims, and start building their own life stories. You’re collecting SIMbols, managing your needs, rolling interaction dice, and chasing aspirations, all while unexpected moments can flip your plans upside down. Very the The Sims. The components are a big win too, great to handle and feels great for both Sims fans and casual players. Thanks to @asmodee_anz for providing us with this review copy. ♟️👫👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨 #boardgames #thesims #gamenight #gameplay #fyp
