२०२६ की कड़ी धूप में
दिल्ली की लाल बत्ती पर
एक गाड़ी से दूसरी गाड़ी का
शीशा खटखटाती हुई भिखारन
डामर की सतह पर बने
मृगजल पर ऐसे थिरकती है
जैसे डल पर तैरता शिकारा।
शीशे के भीतर से आती
माफ़ी को दुआ देती,
गाली को हँसी में उड़ाती,
और चुप्पी को पढ़ती हुई,
वह लुटाती है मनुष्यता की दौलत
उस इंसान पर, जिसने
माफ़ी से बचाये दस रुपए,
गाली से बचाये दस सेकंड ,
चुप्पी से बचाये दस सवाल
और बत्ती हरी होते ही
१०६ रुपए प्रति लीटर का ईंधन भरने
ऐसे मुड़ा
जैसे मुड़ता हो अक्सर बंदूक की तरफ़
जब सुनता है डल वाली मस्जिद से
आती हुई मग़रिब की नमाज़।
या फिर
जैसे मुड़ता हो किसी टूरिस्ट की तरफ़
जब सुनता हो उनके मुँह से 'राजस्थान'
और छन से याद आता हो अपना गाँव
जहाँ रेगिस्तान की कड़ी धूप में
कभी बंजारे नाचा करते थे।
२०२६ की कड़ी धूप में
आज वही बंजारे
दिल्ली की लाल बत्ती पर
अपनी मनुष्यता की दौलत
उसपर लुटा रहे हैं,
और वह खड़ा है
एक अनजान मस्जिद के सामने
बत्ती हरी होने के इंतज़ार में -
माफ़ी माँगता,
गाली देता,
या चुप।
"हम कुत्ते और तुम इंसान बहुत एक जैसे हैं। जैसे…हम विपदा-आपदा में एक-सा बर्ताव करते हैं, हम उन्हें स्वीकार लेते हैं।"

On a non-descript November afternoon, Jay Joshi from @onmykayroll had a rather curious proposition. I accepted it on a whim hoping to get a breath of fresh air when the AQI was bent on making you disappear.
What followed has not only been a test of character but a lesson in finding comfort in borrowed skin - quite literally. The body became a hideout where I could have endless conversations with myself, spy on others from behind a seemingly dead glass wall and ironically, live a second life.
The first look of ANARTH is out and there's a host of humans who have risked their blood going black to make it happen.

"हां, बस थोड़ी देर में घर पहुंच जाऊंगी।"
सिग्नल लाल था। टैक्सी खड़ी थी। कान में फंसे ईयरफ़ोन्स पर दिनभर गाने सुनते सुनते टैक्सीवाला थक गया था। अमूमन शाम का हाल यूं ही रहता। ट्रैफिक को पछाड़ देने का ख़याल फीका पड़ने लगता तब वह समझ जाता कि काम ख़त्म करने का वक्त आ गया है।
तब वह टैक्सी से एक हाथ बाहर निकालकर आसपास की गाड़ियों में झांकने लगता या फिर अपनी टैक्सी में बिठाए यात्रियों की बातचीत सुनने लगता। आज की यात्री फोन पर थी। उसने सुन लिया - "हां, बस थोड़ी देर में घर पहुंच जाऊंगी।"
पहुंचने के ख़याल में चाह थी। अपनों के लिए पैसा कमाने जो समय हम दूसरों के नाम लिख देते हैं, उस समय के समाप्त हो जाने का आनंद था। अब अपना वक़्त अपनों के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जाएगा - यह स्वायत्त एहसास था।
शहर में पैदा होनेवालों को यह स्वायत्तता जन्म से ही मिलती है। टैक्सीवाला शहर से नहीं था। शहर उसकी मजबूरी थी, जैसे नौकरी यात्री की।
जब उसकी नज़र पड़ोसी गाड़ियों से ऊपर उठी तब उसे दिशा का ख़याल आया। वह पूर्व की तरफ़ चल रहा था। गांव उसी दिशा में हैं। ज़ाहिर है, घर भी। घर की मिट्टी की दीवारों को याद करते हुए वह आसमान को छत बना चुका था।
ठीक उसी वक्त, टैक्सी के पार सड़क के किनारे फ़ुटपाथ पर खड़ा सफेद दाढ़ीवाला आदमी अपने पुश्तैनी घर की तरफ देखता हुआ खड़ा था। कल यह घर नहीं रहनेवाला था ऐसा नोटिस आया था। बुलडोजर के आने से पहले यह उसकी अपने पूर्वजों के साथ आख़री बातचीत थी।
उसे इस टैक्सी का ख़याल नहीं था, न टैक्सीवाले की जिंदगी में दिलचस्पी और ना ही पीछे बैठे यात्री से कोई लेना देना। वह बस अपना घर देख रहा था, जो कल वहां नहीं रहेगा।
अपने अपने घरों से तीनों उतने ही दूर थे जितना कि एक दूसरे से। उतने में सिग्नल हरा हुआ।

An abridged version of CHANDNI RAATEIN, our magnificent spectacle is being performed as the Centre for Russian Studies at JNU celebrates its Diamond Jubilee.
We are immensely proud to be performing our musical adaptation in front of Aleksei Dostoevsky, the great-great-grandson of Fyodor Dostoevsky who shall speak on 'Dostoevsky and his Legacy' just a little while before our show.
This moment and this day holds a special importance in our journey of theatre making at Aarambh Mumbai.
