🍻The Golden Flake Tavern 🍻
This was a pretty special brief!
I was tasked with designing the logo and producing a range of hand painted signage for @greggs_official ’s first pub, The Golden Flake Tavern, located in @fenwickofficial .
The aim of the logo was to marry the fun of Greggs with a traditional English pub aesthetic. What says this better than an ornate sausage roll border?? 🤔

It blows my mind to see my lettering at this scale on stages across the world. To have been asked to make it for a band I’m a huge fan of makes it even wilder.
I had a big moment of reflection when I first saw this image and whilst sharing personal stuff isn’t my always my jam, I felt this could be useful.
My journey in the arts hasn’t followed a traditional route. I didn’t take art for GCSEs and my degree wasn’t in fine art or graphic design. Don’t get me wrong, qualifications in what you want to do in life are very valuable, they’re just not always essential. I still of course had to work hard to teach myself and learn from others in the business, it just wasn’t via the formal avenues of academia.
Naturally, I experienced a lot of doubt when I started out on my own 11 years ago and my lack of experience made me question whether I’d be able to succeed in such a competitive industry. These thoughts are still very present today, just fortunately less impactful.
This image of the @fontainesband logo reminded of those past academic insecurities and how inconsequential they’ve turned out to be. I know a lot of artists have had it similar and many even harder but it’s easy to forget this when you often only see the end product on instagram. I hope this proves useful reading for any young and aspiring creatives that follow me on here who might be experiencing similar doubts.

Done and dusted.
All 14 Grainger Market door numbers, hand-painted by our mate Ash Willerton. A perfect welcome, and a fitting complement to the building’s bold, symmetrical Georgian proportions. Great to see his interpretation of our Grainger typeface brought to life.
Hats off to Tania Love and the Faulkner Browns team for bringing him into the fold, alongside the Deadgood gang - rounding off a fantastic project.

We’ve loved seeing local artist Ash Willerton work his magic at the Grainger Market with Creative Central NCL.
His expert craftmanship is bringing the new brand and typeface to life, using the tradition skill of hand painting to number each of the 14 entrances.
Based in Newcastle, Ash is a lettering artist and a designer who has worked on some incredible projects including the Fontaines DC album cover, Gateshead House and Heaton's newest sandwich shop, Handsome Sandwich:
It’s another proud moment for as we see the Grainger Market brand brought to life with such beauty and precision.
